I have been trying out and testing the Beta 1 version of IE7 under XP SP2 for a few days now and I must say I have no complaints. New tab feature is great, "phishing filter" works nicely and there hasn't been one crash yet. All in all, it's pretty good so far! Anybody else tried it out?An interesting and fresh feature in Internet Explorer 7 (Beta). “Phishing” has become one of the top problems in our internet lives, just like viruses, trojans and most of all spyware. We, users, mainly find “Phishing” in our emails, where spammers take advantage in acquiring our personal details and login details of popular websites. Microsoft made it a priority to help solve this problem by including this element in IE 7 (Beta). Download (http://www.lostcoders.net/download/temp/IE7-WindowsXP-x86-enu.rar) I Screenshot (http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a171/auggie2k/IE7.jpg) I Microsoft Watch (http://www.microsoft-watch.com/article2/0,1995,1776290,00.asp) I Changes (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/ie7/default.mspx) I Overview (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/info.aspx?na=90&p=&SrcDisplayLang=en&SrcCategoryId=&SrcFamilyId=718E9B3A-64FE-4A4C-9DDF-57AF0472EAD2&u=http%3a%2f%2fdownload.microsoft.com%2fdownload%2 fa%2fa%2f6%2faa67e94e-d194-4576-abe7-72f08667fdd4%2fIE7-beta1_Technical_Overview.doc)

What you mentioned is about all they have changed so far.
It still renders a lot of valid HTML and CSS improperly. I will be more interested to see Beta 2.

It's kind of sad - with the large user base that IE has, MIcrosoft could really improve the world's surfing habits and make it easier for everyone - but, then again, this is what happens when you have a monopoly...
But, honestly, I can't really consider IE a worthy browser until it can render all pages correctly - with all the money and talen that Microsoft has, there's no excuse for not being up to standards (other then they're lazy)

Clearly the voice of a shrewd man.
Actually I did download IE7, but during the install it wants to connect to microsoft to verify my copy of windows. I am sure there is a workaround for this, but I can't be bothered to look for it.
Not that there is anything dodgy about my copy of windows of course. I was just concerned about the *ahem* privacy implications.
Anyway, as cpu said this just sounds like the old IE6 engine with tabbed browsing; something which is already done just fine by any number of shell extensions.
I think the biggest improvement I would like is for microsoft to abandon the active X component of their browser which is really the source of all the malware trouble IE users run into. I would also like to see MS embrace a more standards compliant approach; however that won't happed.
BTW - nice screen shot there auggie2k
I very much doubt it.
You are 100% correct. It doesn't.

Beta 1 won't work on SP1 according to Microsoft
From http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/ie7/default.mspx:
"Internet Explorer 7 Beta 1 is available now in two versions: a standalone version for Windows XP Service Pack 2, and an enhanced version that is built into Beta 1 of Microsoft Windows Vista—formerly Windows code-named “Longhorn”—to take advantage of new features of the Windows Vista platform."

Oops - no idea how that happened!
Anyway, I "stumbled" across a copy of Beta 1, and I'll admit that it shows promise. Tabs seem to work as they do with any other browser (a welcomed addition), and I'm a huge fan of the phishing filter. As long as Microsoft keeps their database up-to-date, I believe it could help to cut down on identity theft.
However, the standards issue still needs to be addressed. On an interesting note, according to the developers blog, IE7 will fix some major standards issues with IE6, but they're admitting already that, although they hope to be up to standards with CSS 2, they won't be able to pass the Acid2 test (a test set out by WC3 that checks to see if a browser is up to standards - http://www.webstandards.org/act/acid2/ ).
From http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2005/07/29/445242.aspx :
"I want to be clear that our intent is to build a platform that fully complies with the appropriate web standards, in particular CSS 2 ( 2.1, once it’s been Recommended). I think we will make a lot of progress against that in IE7 through our goal of removing the worst painful bugs that make our platform difficult to use for web developers.
"In that vein, I’ve seen a lot of comments asking if we will pass the Acid2 browser test (http://www.webstandards.org/act/acid2/) published by the Web Standards Project (http://www.webstandards.org/) when IE7 ships. I’ll go ahead and relieve the suspense by saying we will not pass this test when IE7 ships."

Well, it looks like you guys have been able to get it to work. I've run across a problem after I installed IE 7.
First, for some odd reseaon, I can not uninstall it, also it has disabled my ability to run a system restore-System restore crashes. Also, I can not get into my "Services" that crashes also. Anyone got any ideas on how to fix this rather than reformatting my drive?
Also, I downloaded it from Auggie2k's link on this post
Thanks

For christ's sake, IE7 is nothing but turd.I just said I "personally" liked the feature, wheres the crime in that. And tabs are a new feature so why not mention it? I'm not one to judge the technical mumbo jumbo of the program because I don't know about it but I posted it up because it's new, its from microsoft and because I knew lots of the current members would appreciate an easy find of it, because you have to register through microsoft to get it. It's a new beta and lots of people would like to test it. I have got loads of thanks for the thread. Your the first to complain. Good one!

Microsoft has updated their Internet Explorer 7 browser graphics: "Hopefully, by now you’ve seen from our posts that there are a lot of new features and work going into IE 7. As part of this update, we’re refreshing our icon and logotype. We considered more radical departures from our current logo, but blue “e” with the ring is very recognizable and familiar to users, so we elected instead to make more subtle changes.
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a171/auggie2k/ie7-logo.png
As you can see, the new “e” has more modern look, and the edges are a bit darker so the icon stands out better against different backgrounds. We liked the gold ring too since it brings in new energy and helps the icon pop a bit more than the old one. This icon and text treatment will be used on the versions of IE 7 for Windows XPSP2, Server 2003 SP1, and x64 versions. We’ll have a slightly different look for the Windows Vista™ version, one that’s more consistent with the icons there. We’re not quite ready with that one yet, but we’ll share it here once we do."

IE is always very hard to remove from Windows. My suggestion is to find an Xp-Antispy "like" program that removes IE. With a bit of Googling I'm sure you'll find a solution.

I guess I'm one of the unlucky ones, once I installed it somehow it knocked out my sound and my ati driver, so had to install them all over again. and I haven't had any luck trying to uninstall this thing or roll back to the previous version. GRRR !

If you don't want to 'install over' your current browser, you can run the beta as a standalone version.
Just extract all the files in that exe file and add an empty file called 'iexplore.exe.local' in the directory. That way you can run it without ever installing it.
This is not perfect because it uses all the settings from your current IE, which might confuse it a lot. It got confused with the favorites menu and the right click menu. (the things in the registry) However all CSS renderings are accurate if you need to test your website renderings.
