VLC is great if you want to be able to play virtually anything with little or no configuration. Some people swear by using media player 6.4 or its 3rd party look alike, Media Player Classic. With those however, you will also have to install codecs.
Unless you desperately need a feature that VLC doesn't have, I suggest you stick with it.

As gaining referred, included with the K-Lite mega codec pack is Media player classic, it's the best video player out there. On the contrary... VideoLAN is great, yet great for LAN (VideoLAN is all about streaming video, not necesserally viewing it). Though indeed it will play ''anything'' well... mostly anything, considering if you have the K-Lite mega codec pack installed, media player classic will play technicaly everything. Finally, the best thing about Media player classic is the fact it uses the least memory and CPU power, and being released as Open-Source since '98', it's been 'tweaked' to perfection for stability ect ect.

Can anyone get the skins to work on the new VLC versions? They have some kick ass skins but none of them work on the new versions for me.
I am a huge VLC fanboi and will not try anything else anymore. Nothing sucks worse than having lots of different players installed mucking up the video playback. Its just asking for trouble IMO.

I would like VLC better if it played MKV files like it's supposed to. I have not been able to play one MKV file properly with VLC. It's not the files, as I am able to play it with GOM player. While GOM plays it better, it's still not great. Any suggestions?

I dunno. VLC plays MKV files perfectly on my PC.
@Feather, for some reason MPC performs like a POS on my pc. It will not play HD movies well and with some movies the audio becomes out of sync but with VLC everything plays perfectly.

I use both VLC and Media Player Classic. They both have their positives and negatives but I like MPC better. The one little thing I don't like about VLC is that you can't stop and start the video you are watching by clicking anywhere on the screen with the mouse like you can in MPC. I know it's very minor but convenience is nice too.

I like MPC a lot but ive been having problems with large files. It doesn't seem to handle them well. Especially HD movie in true 720p or higher. VLC plays HD movies with ease and never frane stutters at all. Ive tried everything to get MPC to improve on HD playback but it will not work properly on my PC. I guess its my PC if everyone else is playing HD movies well with MPC.

You could set the pause key as the left mouse button. Just a suggestion.
EDIT! I actually tried this and it would not set to the left mouse button for some reason. I tried it using the "Mouse wheel" and it works. When I scroll down on the mouse wheel it pauses. I dunno if that helps any.

I guess I hadn't looked into changing any of the settings, lol. I only use it when MPC can't play something or for some reason has streaks down the screen during playback which has happened a few times lately for some reason.
Thanks for the info, it'll make using VLC just like MPC now. :)

Look up at my edit. I had to use the "mouse wheel". The green screen or streaks is caused by some screwed up codecs. This can happen from time to time. If you uninstall and then reinstal them that problem should go away unless another player is causing the trouble.

No biggie with the mouse wheel thing. I almost always use the space bar anyway which works in VLC by default.
If the green streaks are caused by the codecs, why would VLC be able to play the movie without the streaks when MPC couldn't? Does VLC use internal codecs?

Hey R&R, use Mplayer for MKV playback if VLC can't get it right.

VLC seems to use codecs in a different manner than VLC. I don't know how but it does. VLC comes with its own set of codecs as well. I use to get the green streaks all the time because I was alwasy trying different codec packs and players. I found out that its caused by some codecs screwing with others in Widows media players.

Thats the whole reason why I like WMPC over VLC. There are a few other interface options that I hate in VLC, like the lack of a popup bar when in full screen mode.

Uhhh, you must have an old version. UPDATE. The newer version has a popup bar and you can place it where ever you want. There are also mods you can use to change the interface. I think you can even make it look just like MPC. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/skins.php

old version or just skinnless? I've got a rather recent version, and I have a friend who uses it regularly, and he's go no popup bar too.
I also like WMPC's ability to upscale videos. I've not seen the same options in VLC. VLC also wont play .rm files, which is how I get my south park episodes. All-in-all, the ONLY complaint I have with WMPC is the lack of playlist options, and that's hardly a disadvantage for me. I always feel hampared when I use VLC. maybe I just need to configure things better, but the contrast of fresh installs between the two programs has me fully fan-boying WMPC.
One thing I do like about VLC is the codecless playback. That is fuckin' sweet. Completely moot point for my pc though, as I'm always converting videos to play on my portable devices. The converter programs wont work if I just have VLC installed. I HAVE installed VLC on other people's machines because they don't need to worry about codecs 'n' stuff. I don't hate VLC, I just found something that works better for me.

Here is a cap of the it placed at the bottom. That is full screen too. The bar just stays small like that. It can scale video too. Youre not looking at all the options. It has TONS! Under the "video" tab go to "zoom" and pick how big or small you want the display.

I didn't use VLC as much until I found it played HD 1080p and 720P video way better than MPC. That may be just my pc but I tried everything to get MPC to perfrom better and it was a no go. Plus I have found the sound, 5 to 1 support, really shitty with MPC. Anyone else have these issues?
I may need to update MPC as its a POS in my opinion.

Well, thats great to know. If WMPC starts to fail me regularly, then it sounds like I know what I can fall back on. It was only a year or so ago that I FINALLY set WMPC as my default video player. There was really nothing I could complain about with WMP, so I just stuck with that. As time went on, it just became bloated and shitty. I started to find myself liking it when I watched southpark just because of the player I was running it in.
One *Last* gripe I have with VLC (and a shitty gripe at that) is the icon's it puts on all your files. That's one thing that I kept using WMP for, the pretty shiny icons for all my videos. I FUCKING HATE the orange cone for video files. I see cone, I think some sort of mod files like .wads for Doom or something. I know they can be changed, but I've had odd issues keeping the changes. It was a little bit of a letdown when I couldn't get WMP icons to stay while I was using WMPC. I let it go though because it still showed little film-strips on the icons, and it wasn't THAT ugly. I guess I just want my icons to be descriptive AND pretty. Orange cones aren't either to me.

Normally I wouldn't even think about installing another media player but since you recommended it I gave her a go. The internal codecs offer smooth play back and its resource lite. I have not tested the HD play back yet. That will make or break it for me. I did like how the install asked about my speaker set up and other options. MPC sucks in the sound department as it doesn't take advantage of my 5 to 1 speaker set up properly. SO far KMP beats the pants off MPC!

Ah, I failed to notice that as well. I'm referring to media player classic when I said "WMPC." When I said "WMP" I meant the default program that is installed with windows.
I always just thought there was a "W" in there because the pre-XP versions of WMP looked exactly the same as MPC. I'm sure that's what they were going for, but i just assumed it was an unoffical offshoot of the original program, and not it's own entity.
