I got the great Windows FD when it was still on Suprnova last year and love the XP install modifications it had. It doesnt ask for a CD key during installation and installs Winrar and Microsoft office automatically with windows! Do any of you know of any other modified Windows XP installation programs? If so tell me your experiences with them.

I was actually thinking of releasing my own "Windows FD"-like modification of windows onto the net. I've been toying with removing things from windows since FDV came out with his "remove IE" guide and then moved to nLite when it first came out.
My ideal windows...
Base: Windows XP Professional Edition, SP2, Corporate, with all hotfixes up until today rolled in. Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, and MSN messenger removed along with most other software. Default theme is Windows Classic, and uses the Classic logon.
Apps: Firefox, Thunderbird (with Enigmime), OpenOffice, 7-Zip, GnuPG (for Thunderbird), and Sun Java all preloaded.
And it should come with a few apps on the cd that the user can install themselves like Outpost, Nod32, Limewire Pro, Bittorrent (Official), eMule (Official), Trillian, TrueCrypt(+TCGINA), Nero, DVDshrink(+DVD43free), AdAware and Spybot.
Yeah, that would kick ass. I'm thinking of doing it, but maybe just keep it for myself.

Well, if you can do without some of those things (or just substitue, for example, Gaim instead of Trillian), why not just make a live Linux CD? Using KDE, you can even make it look like classic.
And, if you really can't live without some of those things, you can always use WINE to run them (I've heard DVDshrink and Nero run decient)

I've been gradually switching myself to free/oss software in preparation for an easy switch to linux (then again I've used firefox since it was phoenix and openoffice since the 0.9 betas, so this has been coming for a long time). I've used gentoo in the past, but now the biggest thing keeping me on windows is just because its comfortable, and ive never had a real issue with it.
I think linux is cool though, and I do see myself switching within a year, definately.

My favorite method, historically, has been using the RunOnceEx method. Ever since I first used it, and realized how powerful it was, I fell in love.
Oli, of willowhayes.co.uk was the first to use this method, his site can be found here: http://www.willowhayes.co.uk/
More detailed guides that build on this method are available at http://unattended.msfn.org/ (advanced users -> advanced methods of install -> runonceex from cd)

I'm like you in the sense that I'm gradually headed towards F/OSS options, but I don't know if I'll be switching to linux any time soon. I've tried it several times in the past, but I can never get used to it. I have learned how to do most everything I am comforatable doing on windows (which is quite a bit), but everything is just so much more difficult to do in linux. It took me two weeks to figure out how to install videolan thanks to interdepenancies. While I've gotten to the point where I can accomplish everything I want to do under linux, I haven't been able to come up with a good reason to do so. Sure, its free, but this is a filesharing site. Everything can be free.
I'm not a big fan of Microsoft, but I can't complain all that much about windows. It does what its supposed to do, and it does it relatively well. Maybe its just because I'm used to it, but everything seems to work better under windows. When I can say the same thing about linux, I'll definately make the switch.

Thanks for those links on how to set up your own installs. This is honestly the first time i've ever heard of this, but i'm really interested to learn. Anyone else have any recommended links they want to share?
Also I feel wonderboy's pain on the linux front. I've installed the dual boot thing two months ago, but linux is still iffy for me, and I haven't found any real good books/sites to help complete newbies do stuff. I'm sure i'll eventually start getting the hang of everything though.

As soon as I can run photoshop and dreamweaver (among other macromedia software) on linux, I'll switch, until then, I can't.

@FrozenShadow23, Wine would more than likely run dreamweaver... probably photoshop too.

I've created an XP SP2 live cd a few months back. It's great. It takes about 5 to 10 minutes to load, but when it does, it's Windows XP with Nero, Firefox, PartitionMagic, and a whole slew of recovery and data fixing software, as well as other software. It detects almost all Plug & Play hardware and allows you to get on the Net. It's the coolest thing I've ever made. Took about 4 months to make it. No hard drive required. It loads EVERYTHING from cd. It's quite bad ass.

Yeah, a lot of people do.
Very few actually do it.
BUT if you do, you will realize how awesome it is.

I liked the responses I got from starting this thread but I didn't get the answer I was looking for. I wanted a name of a modded XP thats in circulation. I don't want to make one myself, I don't have the time to do so, at least, not yet.

Heck yeah! I know I've already made a Bart PE disc, and that was pretty 1337 as is :)
My only thought about making a Linux-based live CD is that if you really get into it, and others really start liking it, you can distribute it on the net without worry of getting shut down or anything. Well, that, and I'm a pretty big Linux fan-boy (in case you guys haven't picked up on that yet ;) )

....It does everything i want it to do and doesnt install alot of stuff you cant remove after installation e.g Prefetch folder, indexing service total removel of firewall and security centre ect
oh and yes you CAN remove IE you just dont remove the html rendering as alot of programs and games use it.
i also got rid of that little xerox folder lol what is with that anyways looks like it was a leftover folder they forgot to remove :hi

now there is a windows nemesis 4.0, You can find it probably on any torrent site now!
Malakai1911
July 22nd, 2005, 09:08 PM
Nemesis looks a little sucky, it has multiples of software that does the same thing. Does it all autoinstall or is it just included on the disk?
Like GAIM and AIM and Trillian. or WinRAR and WinZIP and 7-Zip. Come on now!
Now that 7zip has drag-and-drop, I can drop WinRAR as my favorite... finally.

Damn it! I got a copy of a Mod'ed Winxp pro, which wasn't the one I wanted. They freaking took out my beloved IE!!!! Damn it damn it damn it! IE is now so damn good nothing else will do, they gave me crappy Firefox instead, well its not crappy I don't guess, just slower. It did come with a lot of nice software though.
