Open-source P2P projects keep swapping

The ripples of anxiety from last month's landmark Supreme Court ruling on peer-to-peer software haven't quite made it to Jonathan Nilson's home in Tallahassee, Fla. Nilson, a programmer who has been working on peer-to-peer software called Shareaza for several years, says the loose band of developers who share responsibility for the open-source project haven't been dissuaded from their work by the court ruling, which is casting a dark legal cloud over the future of companies such as Grokster and LimeWire.
Nilson cautions that neither he nor anyone else can speak with authority on behalf of the project as a whole. For the most part, that's exactly why he and the others feel sheltered. As is the case with many loosely organized, open-source programming projects, there is no central entity, no "Shareaza" company or organization that issues paychecks or answers lawyers' telephone calls.

That's the beauty of open-source - and, if it eventually gets shut down, someone else will just pick up development. Honestly, I don't even use any p2p program that isn't open-source

Well i prefer Open-Source, naturally. Yet the only P2P programs I use to begin with aren't Open-Source. They are Bearshare, eDonkey2000 and Azueus.

I really think he meant Azureus. That azueus.com domain is just a common misspelling that happens to be pointed at a pay-for p2p scam site.

I think eMule (especially eMule+) is among the best right now, but there are alot of great open-source projects out there, and they will never go away.

eMule is utter garbage it uses MD5 (broken), it is too easy to pollute files, leaves you wide open for copyright enforcers and has a truelly dire code base, it was no fun trying to get it to compile (I gave up in disgust)!

ed2k is history, BT is now e.g. much more secure, and much faster!

ed2k really is stuffed, there are three incompatible versions of Kadmelia in-use and the hashing algorithm is a joke compared to BT, no wonder I saw so many fakes on eMule! As far as I can tell there is still no viable Java GUI client for ed2k or eMule Kadmelia and the commercial secret code eXeem always sucked. As for the use of ed2k index servers, there were a serious security and performance flaw in the ed2k system design, also the use of C++ by amateurs is bound to cause buffer overflows and null pointer issues, and crackers just love that!

Azureus is IMHO the best and most secure P2P client, for real results now, because it downloads very fast, uses DHT and magnet links, is very secure because it uses Java, has an excellent IP filter, has the SafePeer plugin available to reliably update the IP filter and can easily be run from a restricted user account, as I do. Oh, and Azureus has plenty of other Java plugins too, RSS readers and page scrapers, Schedulers, Software auto-updaters etc. not all are listed on the Azureus site.
