You know you're in trouble when your adware fires you. Kazaa parent Sharman Networks issued a grumpy press release today noting that reports of its dissociation from adware maker Claria (formerly Gator) have been misunderstood

Granted, Claria was the one to terminate its relationship with Kazaa, as first reported by my colleague Stefanie Olsen here. But Sharman had already been concerned about Claria's "lack of performance" under a contract in which the oft-maligned advertising software company had agreed to "adhere to high standards," Sharman said.

(Sounds to me like one of those "You can't fire me, I quit," protests.)

Indeed, it seems that none of these companies are comfortable associating with each other these days. Claria may or may not be in the middle of negotiations to be purchased by Microsoft, according to the New York Times. Sharman, meanwhile, has just had its business model given a fat Bronx cheer by the Supreme Court. With everybody's future on tenterhooks, it's no wonder the companies are a little tense.

i suppose they are indifferent to the loss of 3 million users mainly because of their spyware reputation?

Maybe everyone just went out and bought the ad-free version of Kazaa, so Claria didn't have anyone to show ads too. (yes, i'm jk)

edonkey was around before kazaa

i used it when napster still existed. back in 98/99 i refused to use kazaa/imesh/bearshare/audiogalaxy for the spyware (and when they added it to edonkey, i dumped that too)

kazaa was evil, and still is. all you needed was an outbound firewall to see just how evil

I did like Audio Galaxy. Even with the spyware, it rocked. Kazaa (K++) in it's time was excellent too. There was only one faster way to get your music, news groups or go buy it.

The truth is the adware back in the older days of Kazaa and AG wasn't nearly as aggressive as it has become today. It could usually be removed without too much trouble. However, today's spyware bundles, almost, or do require, a full reformatting to clean up.

I knew AG had the spyware. I also knew I could find almost every song I ever wanted. It didn't take long to fill a HD in those days. At least AG died a quick death. It looks like Kazaa is going down slowly and painfully. Some people just don't know when to let go.

Well Sharman Networks and thier misreable bunch of cronies are finally getting their day! I laugh in their face! It is pretty bad when a company that produces adware doesn't even want you as a customer anymore! But Sharman networks literally drove that company into the ground..... they were SO sure of themselves when they started suing the makers of kazaa lite and then putting spyware on everyones computers. Now it has come back to bite them in the ass and I think it is HILARIOUS!! HAAAAAA! HAAAAA!

They can see probably 3million users online, but how many with kazaa lite or other fast track clients without any adware on it.. They probably was paying too much to kazaa knowing that they had no way of knowing how many ads was being seen.
