7-Zip is a file archiver with a high compression ratio. The program supports 7z, ZIP, RAR, CAB, GZIP, BZIP2, and TAR formats. Compression ratio in the new 7z format is 30-50% better than ratio in ZIP format. It also compresses to ZIP 2-10% better than PKZip and WinZip. It has an additional powerful command line version and FAR Manager support.

winrar does it all as well... I like it since i download movies, i change the rar file to .vob and preview it.

The only thing WinRAR won't do is create 7z archives. And they tend to have better compression ratios than RAR. I use 7z for my backups.

Movies and music doesnt compress that much down, its just easier to use with PAR on newsgroups to repair the archives after checking it with sfv.

Most movies and music are never compressed when you download them, so it makes little difference which format is used. They're just spanned.

Also, PAR isn't really comparable to RAR or 7z. Its function is quite different.

Like I said, I use 7z for my backups (document backups, not media). And I use WinRAR for unpacking pretty much everything else.
