Yeah, I couldn't find the right place to ask my question on these forums, so I thought here would be good enough.

So, onto my problem.

My Internet connection just plain sucks. It's a Verizon 768k DSL connection and everytime I get a phone call, it'll go down for about 45 seconds, and it runs abnormally slow (and I mean slow- if I try to download a file, the fastest speed I've gotten is around 56 kbps, where I know it should be going faster because on my Wireless router, I can connect to my neighbors modem and get speeds around 250-350 kbps on some files.). I thought this would place would be the best to ask for tips/help for problem.

Try running a test on your line at http://www.dslreports.com/stest

Then let us know what they rate your speed.

Are you using a DSL filter? Radio Shack and stores like Best Buy have them. Verizon or whomever your DSL provider is should have provided enough for all the jacks in your home.

dont bitch you could have 56k jerk lol i was once a hardcore 56k user i dled gigs upon gigs on 56k you should be thankful it could be so much worse

I was about to say the same... I had the same problem when I first got my SBC DSL. The problem was with a bad filter. Once I replaced it, everything was fine.

I hear you. I was on dial-up for several years. I managed to d/l about 30 gigs of music. Shared it too.

I graduated from dial-up around October of last year. I may have to give up the internet altogther if I ever have to go back.

I'm pretty sure there is a filter on all of the phones, I'll check in a bit.

That's what the test gave me, which is pretty accurate.

That is truly a strange reading. Your download speed is about half of what it should be and your upload speed is nearly three times higher then it should be. I'm going assume this is caused by some bad voodoo possibly from a shaman or witch doctor you pissed off in a previous life. On the other hand it may just be latency issues caused by bad copper wiring or perhaps distortion on the line. Try a different phone jack first then call Verizon (A.K.A. India) they will likely have you ping their office from the command line and have you reboot your computer and crap like that but may be your only option.

Of course most importantly do you use a firewall and/or Adaware or Spybot? If you do not, you almost certainly have a spyware/adware issue which would easily cause the problems you have just described. This is the primary cause of many computer/Internet related slowdowns and should not be overlooked.

Yes, I do have a firewall and anti-spyware programs (Zone Alarm Pro Firewall, Adaware, Spybot, and Spy Doctor).

Since your line seems affected by the phone ringing make sure all cordless phones are away from the computer, DSL modem, or network hub if you have one.

Try updating the device drivers or even switching slots on your network card. I believe Verizon has jumped their customer’s connections up to 1.5megs in most areas I don't know if that applies to you. But a new modem may fix your problem and double your speed in the process. Also try switching phone jacks and even tracing the path of your line. Any electronic device near the line has potential to interfere with the flow of electrons (Microwave, TV, Blah, Blah). If the line is old replace it.

If none of this works I'm affraid you may need to call Verizon and talk to the dreaded tech support.
