Powerbook

I want to get a powerbook. Yea, apple. I know there's a bunch of 'EW APPLE' people here, and a few 'YAY I LOVE APPLE' people too... and a few 'I LIKE LINUX CUZ MICROSOFT SUCKS' people as well.

This is for the educated, not the dipshits that are going to tell me that Apple sucks.

I'm poor as hell, but I want a laptop (school purposes). Through Apple I can get an educational discount. I like trying new things, I like learning new things, I like having firsthand experience with things before I talk about them. Do you think that a Powerbook would be worth the money for someone like me? It's a lot of money, really, and I'm very 50/50 on this right now. Sometimes I think I need something completely idiot-friendly (user-friendly).

Right now I'm looking at the 15" 1.67 GHz powerbook with one GB of ram (two 512 sticks).

Id go for it specialy if you get a good discount although its alot of money i guess it depends on what kind of work you will be doing on it, if its only notes and write ups then you could find something much cheaper that will get the job done just as good.

Potato, if all your doing is writing up paper, some printing, and other low graphic stuff then look for a used Apple notebook. You should be able to get it cheaper then $2234. If you want portable gaming power then that the computer you go for.

I don't know where you're based, but here in the UK the Apple store website does a refurb sale every Wednesday at 10am sharp. Discounts of up to 40% on refurbished products, some amazing stuff there - but they go quick!!

I have a 12" powerbook 1GHz which is my pride and joy, I use it amongst other things to drive my Sanyo projector - it has better DVD output than most DVD players out there :)

If you're a bit short on cash, you may want to consider the iBook line, Powerbook's cheaper but similarly attractive little brothers. Whatever you pick, however, you'll love it. They are the most perfectly formed laptops around - but they do come a bit short on gaming, so be warned.

I like learning new things... I really have very limited experience with Macs and I'd like to get better acquainted with them.

As for this refurbished idea, that's kinda neat.... I'll look into that.

Add a 512 stick to that, and the total is higher than what I mentioned: $2,449

If you want to just learn how to use an Apple and don't need to render video at the fastest speed possible, you could try an iBook. They're great for basic computing and multimedia. Also, they're secksay.

go get it potato if you can afford it but you can get a regular pc laptop for under 800 etc.

Are you stuck getting a PowerBook, or can you get an iBook? You won't need the power of the PowerBook, the iBook would likely serve you well. It would be a lot cheaper too.

Unless you absolutely need a laptop, the mini might not be a bad option. Its a decent computer, and only $500 - $480 (I think) with the educational discount.

I want a laptop because I recently moved off campus and I absolutely despise using the school's computers. They tend to freeze when I'm doing important things, like writing papers. I like the mobility of laptops as well. My PC is in my closet, and if I want to move it, I have to take apart my desk. :(

I want a mac because I want to learn something new. So... no Windows.

I think the ibook is ugly. :p If I'm going to spend a ton of money, I want to spend the ton of money on something I like.

I agree with CPU on this. A powerbook is is a lot of horsepower for word processing and similar tasks. But I could honestly say that if you got the money to drop on one, do it. That's the kind of machine that will last you a long time. And learning OS X is not very hard and it is a very nice operating system. Tiger looks pretty sweet. I'm envious.
