Hey guys,

There's a "Policy Parliament" tomorrow for the Young Liberals in Toronto, and I'm going to try and get this policy put on the agenda. Basically the gist of it is "The recording industry is screwed and we shouldn't be using our legal system to enforce a bad business model". I'm wondering what you guys think about this idea, if you have any good suggestions, and if anyone has some experience proposing things like this to political parties.

If this policy is passed at the meeting tomorrow, it would have the chance to become official "Young Liberal" policy (at another meeting). If it were to be an official Young Liberal position, it might create a great deal of awareness of the p2p community, and those of us who support weaker IP laws.

If anyone could point me towards some literature that I might be able to bring to this meeting as supporting documentation, I would appreciate it.

Sincerely,

Chris H

LEGALIZE MUSIC
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WHERAS recent technological developments have created unprecedented
opportunity for the sharing of music through electronic peer-to-peer
networks;

WHERAS these same technological developments have significantly
weakened the traditional business model of the Recording Industry in
Canada and throughout the world;

WHERAS; the Recording Industry in Canada has sought to maintain the
profitability of it's traditional business model through the pursuit
of legal action against numerous Canadian individuals, and promises to
continue this strategy in the future. The recording industry also
seeks the prohibition of certain file-sharing and communications
technologies.

BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Liberal Party of Canada urge the Canadian
Government to resist the use of the Canadian legal system as a tool to
maintain the profitability of any particular business model, and to
consider the rewriting of copyright legislation to achieve this.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT the Liberal party of Canada urge the
Canadian Government to help the Recording Industry in Canada, and
especially Canadian artists, to help develop new business models which
take advantage of modern technological realities.
