Bittorrent is good, but not as easy to begin with as Limewire or Ares. Just remember to opt out the searchbar spyware stuff when you install Ares. They are both easy to learn though. Bittorrrent is very good, but you'll have to do some reading on how to use it properly. There are lots of tutorials.
As for getting caught, I can't make promises, but there's strength in numbers. Be sure to share your files! Don't be a leech. Welcome to ZP and GL!

Never used Limewire so I can't comment on that. I'd also recommend Ares (http://www.aresgalaxy.org).It's good and easy to setup. If you're going to use the bittorrent network, I'd say the easiest programs to start with would be either the original bittorrent (http://www.bittorrent.com) client or bitTornado (http://bittornado.com) which is based off the original. Another good network to start with is the edonkey network. I'd recommend the emuleplus (http://emuleplus.info) client for that.
