I was reading one of LegedzofAranna's threads, and I realized that what people really care about in the Zeropaid forums is console RPGs...

What is your favorite console RPG?

By the way, for the uninitiated, RPG stands for "Role-Playing Game." In other words, a game in which you play a role.

Usually you beat-up on forest creatures (like squirrels and bushes) for a while to gain experience so that you can better utilize your wooden sword, all while trying to get money so that you can buy better weapons and armor. As soon as you buy better gear, you go out and fight harder forest creatures (think wolves and bigger bushes) in order to get more money and experience.

After you have beaten enough enemies to have high levels and bitchin' weapons, there is usually a boss fight--then more leveling-up.

The RPGs usually focus on someone that has lost something or has to find something or has to find something they have lost and involves either a prince, king or the sibling of a prince/king.

RPGs usually use magic... and have different levels of magics that are similar... such as fire! and fire2!

RPGs are really cool and fun. They usually have a long, involved story that takes hours and hours of playing and keep you out of daylight for the most part. The stories often are about saving the world... what else its there to do for a RPG? I wouldn't want to play the role of a mailman delivering mail in a RPG (especially if I were a mailman... where is the escapism in that?).

So... what is your favorite RPG?

Mine is Final Fantasy 7... it is way cool.

You guys are lame...

I didn't put in FFX because it had no overworld in which you can roam... I want to fly my airship and chocobo over the world map dammit! And that blitzball game was boring as hell.

FFI super special advance version is still lame... (but I would like a pointy purple black mage hat and a wooden staff all the same).

FF7, hands down, no contenders. I love them all but it redefined the genre.

I would not have guessed that with your choice of avatars... BTW, I wonder what RPG would have been Sphiroth's... unfortunately he is not here to ask... so we may only speculate.

Ok. let me try this again. (Some kind of sql error lost my previous post).

My vote is for FF7 though I would have preferred FF8.

I think there was an an actual "overworld" in FFX. You just couldn't get the damn airship until too late in the game and the Chocobos were restricted to one valley. I recally going places to capture monsters for that monster battle guy and going out in the middle of the ocean to that oil rig/island thing to acquire that Aeon (or whatever they were called for that game).

I think I will pass on FFXI and look forward to FFXII. I have yet to play X-2. Perhaps that will be my next choice.

FFXII is my most most most anticipated game of 2005. I'm going to get the super platinum edition and I will buy some FFXII action figures and some FFXII posters and some FFXII soundtrack and i'll wake up at 6 am just to go to EB games store to be the first one to buy it. This game is going to break the ground. I mean it's groundbreaking. Check out the trailers and screenshots right here at ign. http://ps2.ign.com/objects/488/488222.html It's one of the top ten most wanted games of 2005 by gamespy. Square Enix have the most emotional music ever. By the way, I need emotional music right now. I'm not feeling well. And one more thing. Ashe is hot. No, I think I should say cute. I have 2 categories for good looking girls. Hot and Cute. And there's a big difference between the two.

Whatever (n00b) ;)

I hated the incessant drawing of magic in that game... but i only spent 10 or so hours playing it, and I did start to get into it. Perhaps after I have played through several other games I will come back to it.

FFX didn't really have an overworld that you could fly around to in real time adn then go into cities... that was more what I was meaning... and I got bored with the game just prior to obtaining the airship, so I really have no idea....

Yeah, they always seem to change things up.

Thanks for the link, LOA. Those were some nice previews. I think I saw elements of FF 7-10 in there. Should be an awesome game.

zelda?............................................ .......

Zelda is Adventure... not RPG... do you ever see Link beating up squirrels with a wooden sword to gain experience? Oh yeah... Zelda II, but that game was just damned weird and it was still just an adventure game with some RPG elements.

I like how you only give options for Final Fantasy games. It is obviously the only console RPG series ever made.

Hmmm... Well, like 10 posts into this thread and 4 UNANIMOUS VOTES for FF7 would seem to be a mandate for the inherent superiority of final fantasy games.

Did you give any alternatives? This is a thread for the best of console games... I would love to hear of more of these "other" games.

Secret of Mana and Chono Trigger for the SNES and Xenogears for the PS1.

Gah... what a bias. There is no vote here... it's not "what's the best console RPG" it's "What's your favorite final fantasy sequel." I'll give FFVII it's due when I decide to take the time to beat it. It was a good game, with some good plot lines, and was a redefinition of RPG. There are other games out there though... I'll break down some of my favorites... again.....

Star Ocean: Second Story - the skill tree and item creation in this was very engaging, and the active combat system made battle intense, while still turn based.

Suikoden - maybe not the best story in the world, but having what... 107? characters at your disposal to interchange in your party, and the development of your castle was quite a turn. The other thing that made this fun was the three different battle modes. Though the army battles and duels broke down to rock paper scissors, it helped ease the monotony of most turn based combat RPG's.

Chrono Trigger - not going to say anything. If you have never played chrono trigger you can't even open your mouth about RPG games... ever.

Breath of FIre III - the entire series is worth mention. Though no true break from traditonal RPG's, the transformation aspect gave something different to the experience.

Parasite Eve - Yes, Parasite Eve. It WAS an RPG. It was a turn based combat RPG. And it blended elements of survival horror games. Not perfection, just damn fun.

Edit: I HATE FF TACTICS.

I second the motion for Secret of Mana and Chronotrigger. I also want to add legend of lufia rise of the sinistrals to it.
