I know that this issues itself has been discussed many times although I haven't got any solution reading those tips and suggestions. Changing of ports, firewall settings, switching to primary/secondary connection etc. It's all the same - both for winmx peer network and opennap.
Connection timeouts ruin my joy.
And what's the main concern is that it's exclusively WINMX problem. I'm quite experienced P2P user. I've tried all the major networks as well as bunch of minor ones and this problem persists only here.
For example. I use eMule a lot too. I've downloaded many files that had only 2-3 complete sources on the whole network. I even got a few that had only ONE SINGLE source and I still managed to get it. Ok, it took a while, but I never even doubted I'll get it. Not to mention the humongous ques got to wait in donkey network, they're measured in thousands not hundreds like in winmx. The network works very stable and as long as the source user comes online for reasonable amounts of time I have no worries.
The same with DC hubs where I haven't seen ''connection timeout'' message at all, even after waiting 3 days for some users who haven't any slots available. The same with Soulseek, Gnutella and any other network I've been engaged with.
On WPN it's tricky to complete a file if it even has 5-10 sources cuz it's regular occurence that they all will timeout before you'll got your turn. Quite impossible to start downloading from users with large ques without trading.
I'm sure it's not my or ''his'' connection problem. It's some fluctuations that happen on the network. For some reason the packets just don't get through causing timeout as a result.
I know, you will suggest things like..
1) don't use this network, use DC or whatever you like
2) propose a trade, don't wait in ques
..and I have answer to those ones
1) for some strange resaon WPN and Opennap has some kind of monopoly for rare music videos; I use winmx for this reason only (why don't you people move to another networks)
2) I do that when I can, but many hours of absence from my pc makes it very uneffective way to get stuff
I don't expect to hear some signifcant solution for this, just voicing my frustration and sharing experience I have absorbed in few years using winmx.
