The next generation of Microsoft's Xbox gaming console, due later this month, will give the world's largest software maker a chance to overtake gaming business leader Sony, Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates asserted on Monday.

"Our goal in the last generation was to be in the game," Gates told reporters. "We came out of this round a strong No. 2."

Speaking at a meeting of the Society of American Business Editors and Writers, Gates said that the newest version of the Xbox, code-named Xenon, would have features that will make the device a more versatile tool for games, music, video and pictures in the living room.

Gates also emphasized that Xenon will take advantage of the growing availability of televisions and content in high-definition format, which allows clearer pictures to be displayed on large, wide screens.

Microsoft is planning release details of its next generation Xbox on May 12 in an MTV special, ahead of a key gaming conference later this month where Sony is also expected to talk about its successor to the PlayStation 2, its current generation console and market leader.

"What we've got in this (next round), at some significant financial cost, was the right to play again with great credibility," Gates said. "So now people are looking at the two companies at a pretty much equal basis."

Asked if Microsoft would be able to beat Sony with Xenon, Gates said that several top employees involved with Xenon had promised Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer that Xenon would beat Sony and that he welcomed that "competitive dynamic."

People tend to underestimate Nintendo and Sony's potential. Plus, Sony have everything moneoa said. And let me add something. "One high-profile developer who has seen both PS3 and Xbox 2 technology recently whisphered into my innocent ear, 'the next PlayStation is way, way more powerful than Xbox 2. It's insanely powerful." - EGM. And to support the Nintendo Revolution, i've seen many polls like the one in http://www.totalnextgen.com/forum_viewtopic.php?9.29 and many more people voted for Nintendo Revolution. One reason might be better graphics doesn't improve games that much. Better gameplay improve games greatly. One example is the newly released pariah. It only has good graphics thus, it didn't get any good reviews. RIght now in gamerankings, it's only a 76.1%.

I agree with you on this one because graphics quility doesn't equil great game play.

I not sure which of the next system would win.

I think its a pretty good assumption that both will be insanely powerful. Aside from the games that will invariably make their way to the market, I'm interested in the modding options for the next gen consoles. From what I understand, the PS3 will have 8 cell processors. Given the pricing trend for consoles, I wouldn't expect the PS3 to be more than $500, which would be an awesome deal for an 8 processor computer if it could be utilized similar to how PCs are used. Which leads to another question: there is a possibility that with the next generation of consoles, their computing capabilities could surpass that of most desktops. If thats the case, how will the PC industry respond?

It will be held to the games at launch time. I wouldnt pay 500 dollars for a console that didnt have alot of great games to take advantage of the power of the console. Sony has great deals across the boards with alot of game developers and Gran Turismo franchise as well as the game God Of War. Im sure the first one to get launched will be the most popular. Its clearly known that so many people cant wait for one console. Some rich people will buy both to have choice. .. At least they keep the market competitive, that we dont have to pay too much through the roof. Oh yeah.. I will wait for a year or two to prices to go down, modding options, and bugs to get worked out on newer versions of the console.

the Cell processor is insanely powerful, do not doubt that. I think on power the PS3 will kick Xboxs Ass. Which will be better in the business sense and overall, we will see.

I will wait:

- till modding options are availiable (inc modchips)
- till they get linux running on them ;)

To be honest I think Nintendo will eventually go the way of Sega and become a Third Party Software Developer.
I look at my PSP and it blows me away the innovation Sony had in making the thing.
Nintendo on the other hand recycled the gameboy Technology for over thirteen years until the DS came out.

The DS to me is too much gimmic, a duel screen pshht :icon_joke They could have made the unit with a touch sensitive screen and excluded the usless second one. Now coming this August they are releasing the new game boy. It feels like sega before they went soley software. Why make a new GB when you just came out with a replacement of the obsolete gameboy.

My bet is on Sony, Ps3 is reputedly stupid powerful moreso than Xbox 360

SEGA GAMEGEAR!!! They were awesome! They had colour screens and everything! :D
I think PS3 will be better than Xbox 360 but I'm not a big console fan. I usually buy it 1 or 2 years after it comes out. That way you don't get stuck with a console that nobody wants to make good games for. And I really couldnt give a shizzle (mofo) about graphics. I suppose nice graphics are an extra but I always have CS on lowest setting and I still play Ultima Online on a freeshard sometimes (yeah I am nerd :D)

I hope ps3 is better than xbox 360. I heard xbox 360 have 9ghz processor, doubling the cell 4.6 ghz and Ati, in my opinion better than nvidia, is making its gpu. To solve these obstacles would be ps3 releases more games than xbox 360. Ps2 have way more games than xbox. With more games comes more fans.
