I want to set up a PHP forum inside the ants web tunnel and also directly on the internet. Can anyone help me with this. I have found a lot of info on google but a lot of it is not clear.

Thanks

I'm not familiar with ants, but I presume you'd have to setup a web server (preferably Apache), and configure it to use PHP?

Windows, I presume?

Yep, lots of good tutorials out there.

Which forum software are you planning to use? phpbb?

Most (all?) popular php forum packages require PHP and MySQL.

On Linux, this bundle of services is often referred to as LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP)...and I've seen the Windows side of things referred to as WAMP.

Check this out:

I've never messed with MySQL before, but from what I've heard it's really convenient to use a tool called phpMyAdmin.

I personally could never get Apache, MySQL/phpMyAdmid/PHP to work together, so I ended up using a webserver called Abyss Web Server, located @ http://www.aprelium.com/abyssws/
Then it shows you pretty roughly how to setup for PHP:
http://www.aprelium.com/abyssws/php.html#windows

Then what I did for my personal webserver was setup phpMyAdmin with the default setup on all of it.. and after some screwin around with it I got it to work...

Good luck.

here are some screen shots of what I am looking at now. I do not know what to t do next. I do not recognise any of that stuff in the screenshot. How do I go from there to a bbs.

It seems to be asking to set up tables. What kind of tablesarethese and what do they have to do with bbs?

thanks much

Looking into it more, does the phpbb setup not create the database for you?

http://www.webdevtips.com/webdevtips/developer/serverstuff/phpbb/index.shtml

It seems to be asking to set up tables. What kind of tablesarethese and what do they have to do with bbs? They're tables in a database...they hold all the data from the forum--posts, settings, etc.

Verizon's web hosting that comes with your internet access account likely does not support PHP.

What he means is that he wants to use his http://www.verizon.net/~username/ (I'm not sure about the URL) webspace, but those typically don't support PHP, much less MySQL.

Basically what it does is gives you a hostname (like tsafa1.dyndns.org) that you can point at whatever IP you want. And you can change it as many times as you want.

(You want a Dynamic DNS)

I have tried Dysdns. It seems to work fine localy I can open it from my windows explorer and from firefox but not from inside Aol. I have asked other people totry to access it and tehy can not too. Do you guys think that this is a security issue with xammp (local server) or a problem with the Dysdns.

The address is :http://swordsman.gotdns.com/ldu800/index.php

Like I said. I am able to open this from firefox on my pc with this address.

Neither.

I'll bet you Verizon blocks port 80 so you cant host a website [on the standard port (hint, hint)].

I changed the port # in the httpd.con file from 80 to 120 and also tried a few other port numbers. no luck.

It opens localy but not over the internet.

Did you restart apache after you changed the conf file? After changing the port to something other than 80, you would access it like this: http://swordsman.gotdns.com:120/

can you post a link. my search keeps comming up with a file transfer program.

I am able to host my forum from within ants no problem, but something is stoping me from publishing on the web directly.

http://151.202.9.191/index.html
(dynamic IP, only good for a day or two)

the folowing link should work but does not. It works internaly from my browser.

I figured it out.

Change your port # to anything other then 80
Reference the port number in the link like this:
http://xx.xxx.xx.xx:8000/index.php

you also have to edit the bottom of the httpd.conf file like this:

NameVirtualHost *:8000

<VirtualHost *:8000>
DocumentRoot c:/xampp/htdocs/
ServerName xyz.gotdns.com
</VirtualHost>

I have completed my site: http://mysite.verizon.net/tsafa1/swordreview.htm
You will see link to forum at the top.
The website is hosted on Verizon's server. The forum is hosted off my PC using Apache.

Thanks for you help everyone and special thanks to SmallFish from the Ants Channel who carried me most of the way.
