View Full Version : An Intimidating 'You Must Read This First'

I fired up my Kazaa Lite tonight and the splash screen was entirely different. I figured that perhaps Niki's Kazaa had been lurking in the KL somehow, just waiting to jump out and 'Ah ha!' me.
Well, I don't know what I saw. I didn't play with the prog at all. I uninstalled it and checked my regclean etc.. I then downloaded another Kazaa Lite. I'm getting confused about the different versions (1.7x or 2 -?), and even more confused about the 'read this first' disclaimer (1.72). The first part of it deals with Kazaa Lite, but the second part deals with Kazaa. No mention of Lite. But the message also talks about the user's contract with Sharman. Yikes! In any case, capitalists are good at presuming and bullying. I'm good at ignoring them. As long as I know that my prog is Kazaa Lite and not Kazaa, the yapping will be ignored.
Am I right?

i don't really understand the question? is it about the prog? or is it about the disclaimer?

It's about both. In any case, any info I can get, I can use. Regarding the disclaimer whatever it's called (the 'read this first before you agree to install this program'...), I don't know how to be clearer. But we can set that aside.
I've sort of moved on. I downloaded/ installed Kazaa Lite 2 last night, to which I say 'no thanks'. I'm sure it's a great prog, but it's not ready or something. It doesn't give me the info that Kazaa 172 gives me. I'll certainly look at it later, when it's 'finished' and people are reporting positively about it.
My 172 is up and running and things look normal. I tried downloading a few flicks last night (courtesy of a friend who got me thinking dirty thoughts and who said he has no trouble downloading movies), but couldn't get them to play. I messaged a few folks from my download/upload monitor window to ask them how to turn off the visualizations and turn on the picture. They were telling me to download wmp 7 or something. I don't know whether I have the latest wmp or not. I only know it doesn't interest me. And I'm not sure what that has to do with my Kazaa Lite Theatre. If it does affect my Theatre, then I assume that's because the wmp is windows and it's settings therefore affect other programs I'm using, which, when it comes to wmp, I resent. I want nothing to do with windows media player. When I used it initially (brand new P4 1.7 pc, windows xp home os and all software and printer all at once and all legit), it made me nuts deleting files on me and other crap. I shut er down and downloaded/ installed winamp and haven't looked back - until now.
I just now checked the windows media player to see whether I could turn off the visualizations, which someone suggested. I see no such 'switch'. I always hit 'work offline' first thing when I fire wmp up, however. Then when I shut it down, and later fire up my browser, I'm told that I'm working offline. Now, Does that mean that when I put my browser 'online', it creates a connection to the internet with my wmp, which I don't want alive?
What am I missing here?

to play those vids you probly need the codecs. dont worry about that tho... if the files are .avi files then get the divx playa at www.divx.com if they are any other video format try winamp3. it should work

Thanks guys. I'll check out the link you posted right now. As for Windows Media Player 6.4, Is it a simple matter of finding it on a website and downloading/ installing it? And if I did that, are there any important things I should do setting wise after that? Do I then need to download/ install codecs and stuff? I'm pretty clueless, remember, when it comes to the technical side of this stuff.
Really though, If I can avoid a Microsoft solution, all the better. These are folks whose regular updates are said to be not all that great, and sometimes harmful! Which is nice to know. Since I have no ability to judge for myself, I'm stuck with having to either take their word that I need their latest update or risk not getting it but needing it.
Later...

Cool! I may try it. However, I also just now tried the dvx player, which worked fine. I really liked the simplicity of it. It worked and I didn't have to do anything to make it work. I'm happy.

"Install 6.4 Associate it with all the file types you want it to play. (usuall all of them)"
Do you not use Winamp to play audio files? I thought just about everyone in the universe did.

That was interesting and informative. I am using windows xp however. But I'll file away the info anyway. Later...

Like I said above WMP 6.4 is already installed on XP
To use it Go to Start > Run and type mplayer2 and click OK...
An even older player is also on probably all versions of Windows including XP - Media Player 5.1
To use it Go to Start > Run and type mplay32 and click OK...

Well, I downloaded a movie that my Divx player wouldn't play. I can't help thinking that it has to do with my Windows Media Player. I'm sorry. But I absolutely don't trust Microsoft. I had a look at the Media Player 6.4, which is indeed on my computer (via the run program, entering 'mplayer2', minus the ' marks). But now that I've fired it up, I wonder what damage it's doing to my computer and various settings. For one thing, the audio is fine, but the video doesn't work. I downloaded/ installed the codecs that a post, above, suggested, to no avail. And when I click on settings, various windows that I go through don't unload. Parts of them stay frozen on my screen. Is possible that wmp 6.4just wasn't meant to work with xp? (I have the home edition.) I noted, when I downloaded/ installed the codecs that the operating systems that were stated to be compatible with 6.4 didn't include xp. Now, If I'm just looking at old, pre-xp documentation, then that's not surprising. Which leads me to my next question, which is: Is there some sort of upgrade for wmp 6.4 that makes it perfectly xp-compatible?
Someone suggested deleting other versions of media player. I didn't think that could be done. I had a look in the Add/Remove program and didn't see it there, which certainly doesn't surprise me. That would be like hearing Bill Gates give a talk outlining the evils of capitalism. If it can be done, Can a dummy like me do it? Or do I have to take a pass on it?

its not microsoft on that one. you'd have the same problems on real, winamp, etc. its the codecs. get the nimo codec pack (not the lite one!!!!). problems solved. if not, add the ace codec pack.

I wouldn't have thought that folks posting in Zeropaid would be so casual about adware/spyware, which the 'nimo codec' contains.

just a few of comments of the few posts i read (i'm tired so i didn't read them all:P)
1. i didn't think you could uninstall wmp versions.
2. wmp might play all types of files.. but i personally don't think it's the best for playing all files.
and ya codecs codecs codecs... gotta have them :)

here are some misc. bits
1)you can't actually uninstall any wmp version , but you can delete their folders
2) xp does not come with 6.4, its only there if you upgraded from ME or 98
3)if you want to install 6.4 on xp it has to be done in compatibility mode for nt 4.0 or one of the other old versions
4)yes some codec bundles contain spyware, but it's easily removed with ad-aware or spybot searh & destroy
5)avoid realone like the plague

Sory but you are wrong on both counts... Look in C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player...
See the file named mplayer2.exe? That is Windows Media Player 6.4
It was installed with Windows... I have a "clean install" of XP - I didn't upgrade from anything...
You are right about RealOne though...

My computer, which I bought last October, is a P4 1.7, with windows xp home pre-installed. My windows xp is not an upgrade. Never had windows 98. When I followed the instructions, above, and typed 'mplayer2' into my Run prog, it loaded a windows media player which says it's version 6.4. Honest.

And for those trying to run it on xp. Its not going to work right. xp wasnt even planned when media 6.4 came out. Its bound to cause problems. Given that xp screws everything up. Xp is crappy and you will need to learn an entirely new way to handle its bugs. And you're all on your own. Nobodys made big huge hint lists and utils for xp yet. Too many things to fix at once.
Once again, Windows Media Player 6.4 Is installed and works just fine on XP...
Just for fun, take a look in the \I386 folder on your XP disk for a file named MPLAYER2.EX__... That is WMP 6.4... Also, there is a file named MPLAY32.EX_ there as well... That is the even older Media Player 5.1
BTW I'm sorry about your opinion of XP, because it is a lot more stable then any Win9x version. of Windows - IMHO

did you upgrade?
a clean install of xp pro full from the original cd will not have 6.4--i know i've done it 12 times now on 6 different computers
xp home could be a different can of worms

I've only dealt with Professional & Corporate - So I can't speak for the Home Edition...
That may be it... They didn't want to confuse the Home User with a choice... lol
(12 times on 6 computers? Do I want to ask?)
