If they ever make that maditory there will be a mass migration to linux.
One of the dumbest things M$ could do.

Nah, I highly doubt that - if people want to move to Linux, they would have already (like I did).

However, I do see this resulting in more widespread security problems. For as many problems as Microsoft has been having with security problems, why they'd do this is beyond me. The fact is that a lot of people are running illegal copies of Windows - and now a lot of people are unpatched against the latest security flaws - therefore, a lot of people who will be helping to spread the latest worms that are released.

I suppose this will help people realize when they're running an illegal copy of the OS (smaller computer manfacturers tend to put unlicensed versions of Windows on their computers and then sell them onto unsupecting consumers), but I really don't see how this is going massively reduce piracy.

I agree that there wouldn't be a mass migration to Linux. It's different, and people don't like change.

I think it would be valid to say that most people that have illegal copies of Windows know that their copy is illegal, and know they should buy the operating system. And for those who don't know, Microsoft has a discount program for people who unknowingly bought a pirated version of Windows.

Nothing Microsoft will do can stop piracy alltogether. It will only inspire more clever workarounds.

Like hacked updates that will install on a copied version.

Well, the updates themselves won't be protected (yet?). Only the ability to download them, apparently.

its already been cracked look at this thread from the AntiWPA forums

http://forums.cjb.net/crackware2k-about115.html

and for those who dont want to download the reg file heres the text version

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WPAEvents]
"OOBETimer"=hex:7f,63,3e,be,ec,25,8e,19,be,a7,92,c6

If people are currently getting windows free and they have to make a choice between:
1. Paying for windows
2. Running windows unpatched
3. Getting Linux free
And there is currently a ton of people with illegal copies of windows then there will be a lot of people moving to all three choices included Linux. Given the unpatched group would most likely be the biggest, which would just make more security problems for Windows and make more people move the Linux.

But like AussieMatt said, it might be just cracked so fast and so many times that it won't change anything at all.

hl2 works in linux.... if you use Cedega to run it (it's like Wine but for DirectX). Fact is that Linux isn't a gaming platform. The best way to get companies to release games for Linux is to buy Linux versions of games. Where there's money, there's going to be games.
