It's usually a good idea to dir before you format from DOS. Drive letters mean nothing.

That sucks, but this is a good lesson to learn, always back-up your files.

You should always back-up your files to cdr or dvdr, make multiple back-ups if possible.

When it's time to format c, I just unplug my externals.

I had a similar, though not quite as devistating problem today. I have cofigured my ps2 to boot off of a hard drive. Because my PS2's dvd drive is pretty crappy, I install all of my games via my PC. Anyway, today I was going to install a game I had downloaded. I hooked the drive up to my pc and tried to start up. Nothing. tried again. Nothing. Then I removed the PS2 drive, and it booted up fine. I then tried the drive in my PS2 again, and it just locked up when trying to read from the HD. More than half the games were mine, so they will be easy to reinstall once I get a replacement. the remainder were a split between downloaded and borrowed games. they will be harder to get back.

Do NOT do anything to that drive yet! You may still be able to recover quite a bit of your data using one of the many data recovery programs available.

Search your favorite regular places for OnTrack Easy Recovery Pro. You will need to restore the data to a different drive also formatted as Fat32.

Media Tolls Pro/File Recovery Tree is also a great program, though I've never been lucky enough to find it on P2P anywhere.

If you've already started saving stuff to that drive, though you won't get much back.

It's expensive to back everything up. Got to do it in small parts. My 120 external gets almost full. Throw a DVD-r in and record 4.7 gigs of music that I dont listen to or move some stuff I didnt like out.

Ive backed up other drives ,but this one had over 40 films,30 apps and years of photos,
ive tried recovering, programs find loads of stuff deleted before.useless.

I seem to having some issues with ntfs I used to always use fat but ntfs more secure ans supposedly quicker right?

Greylin

definately more secure......about being quicker I don't think there is a big enough difference to pick based on speed. I can't see a reason to use FAT32 unless forced to by an antiquated OS. I guess recovering data might be a little easier with FAT.

The only other notable limitation of FAT32 I've run into is the inability to store files larger than 4 GB.

the lesson is to USE DESCRIPTIVE VOLUME LABELS that way fdisk will show the label when you go to remove partitions.

What ive done now.is using a SATA drive to store all my new Films and Data on.
Beuty of sata they are hotplugable.so if i have to format aqain i can unplug them easily.
