my son was watching nickelodeon, and i was sitting nearby, and heard a segment between commercials about a "real life" person i heard her talking about the music she likes, and looked at the screen
here's the scene: girl, age 13
"well yeah, i like avril, and <whatever>, and the spice girls (they're like really old), and <name>, and <name>"
all the while, she was flipping through a cd wallet, naming them off--the point of this story? THEY WERE ALL BURNED CDS! there were no original discs! memorex, maxell, you name it, with sharpie marker that says "avril lavigne" etc.
i really like the message of futility portrayed by AOL/viacom, as on one hand they promote these pop idol whatevers on their awards shows, but show the reality that 13 year old girls are just as happy with a free copy
and now back to your regularly scheduled program
