I don't download all that much - a gig or two a month at most. About 2 months ago, I got a netgear router so that I could use my new computer online. everything was peachy until I started using bittorrent with it. At first, I thought I had a NAT issue. I made sure everything was properly configured, and I even got azureus to tell me my connection was OK. Still, the problems persist. I currently have two large downloads in the process - one with 60+ seeds/1800+ Leechers, the other with 20+ seeds/170 leechers. Both are 'green.' However, the combined download speed of both rarely tops 15KB/s, less than half of my avalible bandwidth. meanwhile, my upload is constantly at ~22KB/s, a number I limited uploads to, thinking that uploading may be the issue.
Long story short, I've come to the conclusion that my router has to be the problem. In fact, if I leave bittorrent running overnight, I often awake to a router that has completely crapped out, devoid of any network traffic whatsoever. The "solution" to this is a hard reset of the router.
So I'm in the market for a better router. does anyone have success stories using bittorrent and a particular router?
BTW, for those of you who may want to konw, my router is a RP614 (v3) - its a $30 router, and I'm thinking that you get what you pay for when it comes to routers.

what firewall are you using, i use bittorent and since i have a router, and dont forward my ports at all i get a good steady download varyin from 30 - 40 kbs, because i upload on the donkey as well, and what not.
hmm
maybe its your software firewall, i could be wrong but hmm

Firewall is not an issue. I am running 64 bit windows, for which there are no decent firewalls yet. Hence the router - it offers atleast some protection. I don't currently, bu have in the past, used windows firewall (ICF).

I use to have a netgear rp 614 router and port forwarded the appropriate ports and got great speeds. I now have a linksys wireless and don't have any problems with that router also. I am using TorrentStorm as a client. My friend has a netgear router for his box too and has good speeds. Have you tried running bittorrent without a router to see if in fact it is the router?

My wireless Compaq router kept crapping out on me as my router, so I switched it to be just an Access Point/Switch and have my Linksys 4port doing the routing function again. My Linksys doesn't have a problem, the compaq did.

I think the speeds you were getting on bittorrent would be normal for that kind of seeder/leecher ratio.
But the router locking up...shouldn't happen :-D I have a Linksys BEFSR41v3 at home...and it works fine. I haven't had any problems with it locking up like that.
On the other hand, my roommate has a Linksys wireless router, and it locks up quite frequently....

I have not been able to try bit torrent with my PC connected directly to the net, simply because the wire isn't long enough. I was able to download at great speeds conected directly using my old computer before I got a router. I have yet to check if My old computer gets decent speeds now that I'm using a router - I might have to check that out.
In frustration, I have port-triggered every possible port for this PC, and port-forwarded a range of 10 ports, so I don't think forwarding/triggering is the problem, unless for some reason my router can handle all the ports open.
As for the speeds I mentioned above, those are best-case scenario. My current downloads frequently go below 4KB/s, and often stop completely for a short period of time. Meanwhile, my uploads are at a constant 20KB/s or greater.
edit: Since my first post, both downloads have turned 'yellow' in azureus, even though azureus states that the connection is "OK."

As far as the speeds and the yellow icons, I wouldn't worry about that. I've noticed that those things tend to vary a lot and often there doesn't seem to be that much of a correlation to seed peer ratio or to the number of seeds and peers. Sometimes I am dowloading something at 4kbs for 10 hours and then it jumps up to 30kps, and things like that.

WB, are you using frimware v6?
Have you flashed the firmware since you bought it?
