I recently purchased a 32 inch High definition CRT television monitor. Now my question is this, i want to use it as a computer monitor to play games on (half life 2 doom 3 etc) I know some of the older HDTVs had issues displaying signals from a graphics card.

I am running an ATI Radeon X800 pro (which has 3 outputs 1 VGA, 1 DVI and an S Video output as well, it also came with an adapter to run S Video into component), and my TV has every conceivable input except DVI. Though it does have HDMI input and I have seen DVI to HDMI plugs for sale at bestbuy and other electronic stores, I am assuming if I buy the DVI to HDMI plug I should be all set to hook my tower up to my HDTV.

Anyone else been successful hooking up their pc to their hdtvs? on a side note the tv I purchased supports standard res (of course) 480i 480p 720p 1080i etc. The manual says it will display any resolution broadcast to the television (which will be great for custom resolution settings in games (I doubt any system has the horsepower to run doom 3 in ultra detail at 1920x1080)

so who can help me with this one?

P.S Gran Turismo 4 supports HDTV settings of 480p and 1080i it looks amazing. (for those who may be interested just thought i would let you know)

I have only connected HDTV's to computer graphics cards that have VGA inputs. That is an important feature. I am sure you can get a good singal using your S-Video out connection, but check and see if you have a VGA input. If you do, you're in luck. Just get a female to female connector and you should be in good shape (keep in mind the maximum length should only be about 6 feet or so.)

Your HDTV will only support whatever its maximum resolution is...I believe you said 720 x 1080...

I've never tried connecting a TV to a computer via DVI, but I'm sure it'll work just fine.

I know S-Video works :-D

Using the SVideo cable on my old 36" TV at 800x600 using my ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon (original Radeon 7200) card, text was actually legable (S-Video connection), and the TV made a decent monitor.

The same TV with an XFX GeForce 6600GT (S-Video connection) was very fuzzy, ATI definately has the home theater segment of the PC market cornered.

You can normally boot with and use the TV instead of a monitor, and there should be no difference with HDTV or not. If the DVI thing doesnt work out, you may need one of these HDTV adapters.

Using the HDTV adapter, you may use 480i, 480p, 720p, or 1080i.

My old GFX card (jaton geforce 4 MX 440) would only recognize my tv once windows had booted. On my new computer though, I was pleasantly supprized to find out that I can boot using the TV. The only thing I don't like about using my TV is that my GFX card apparently will only output 1024 x 768, thus cropping my normal 1280 x 1024 desktop. That won't be a problem for you, though.

And should you run into any problems with your HDTV, I'd be more than willing to take it off of your hands.

OK, sorry it took so long to reply, i have been very busy lately. The route i went it using my televisions HDMI input, I went and bought a DVI to HDMI connector (ridiculously expensive, for a 6 foot cable it was 100 dollars), it works fairly well but under windows 2000 pro the ATI drivers will not allow independent adjustments of refresh rates and resolutions. So i have to install windows XP. Also, the TVs max resolution is 1920x1080 (VERY high) it will up convert 1280x720 or any other res to its native one.

I tried the S-Video (my card came with S-Video to component cord) and it worked ok, but it was a bit fuzzy, with the DVI to HDMI it looks very sharp, except the screen is horribly squashed because i cannot adjust the resolution and refresh rates under the current operating system. This is turning out to be a huge pain in the ass. And no, the TV is not plasma (yuck) it is a CRT.

Why would you want to play pc games on hdtv when you will be able to play next generation console games, which has better graphics than pc games, on hdtv?

OK console kiddie what in the hell was the point of your post? To just try and make a point? To continue telling yourself consoles are better? To gush about your love of Xbox etc? To try and show your are "in the know" about the gaming industry? To appear knowledgeable? You're a smart one, suggest an option that doesn't even exist yet, and pawn it off as a viable solution.

And I am also CERTAIN that the pc video game industry as a whole will begin to stagnate this very second, and consoles will finally see their rise to power as the ultimate entertainment medium.

And sorry, console games will NEVER surpass PC games. (the psx 3 looks interesting though) even at the time of its release the PS2 had a laughable amount of ram, 32 megs, this was only 5 or 6 years ago.

Consoles are always crippled.

Now my question is, why would you want to be a moronic console fanboy when you can play real video games on a computer?

I guess you got it worked out then huh? I think in your previous situation i would just upgrade to XP, so you can get the refresh thing to work right. i think i recall reading that Xp is alot more compatiable with the newer games anyway.
