I have always wanted to know something but I can't figure it out. How come There is always Programs like Kazaa and gnucleus being cloned but Napster has never been cloned. I mean Winmx is the closes but there has never been a clone of it.

although its all Porn, Sexter is a 100% ripoff of napster, right down to the hot list and chat interface. Also note that the Napster company applied for a number of core patents relating to P2P technology, patents that were eventually granted. I think once (or if) these networks become profitable entities you'll see whoever owns the Napster patents start coming after their descendants for licensing fees.

Napster is closed source , so hard to clone, however there are many look-a-like clients

ya... the reason progs like kazaa have very similar programs like morpheus, grokster, and imesh, is cuz they are licecensing the source from fasttrack.

not to mention that napster was a failure--why would someone copy a loser? make a new one thats a winner right?

Lopster is a Linux client, but it really resembles Napster, it's almost if someone actually took the Napster source code, and ported it to the Linux/Gnome interface. Screenshots are available at http://lopster.sourceforge.net. Under information, and then screenshots, im just too lazy to post a direct link :upside
