I just recently put together a computer from parts I had laying around in my garage. It is a 300mhz pentium with 128mb ram and a 10 gig HD. I loaded win2k pro and have it up and running. Got all the updates and everything is running well, except for my CD-rom. It can read auto play cd's, but it won't read data CDR's. What's weird is that I made a copy of my linksys CD (made with ConeCD), so I could use that disk in my garage, but it won't read it, but if I put the original linksys CD in it plays and reads just fine. I have checked all the slave/master jumpers and IDE cables and I don't think I missed anything, but what could be wrong? Anyone?

I tried a disk that I made, that I know for a fact reads on my indoor puter. No cigar! I have tried rewrites and cdr's, samsung, sony, memorex,etc...nothing will read except for legit CD's with auto play. For example, I tried a motherboard disk and that fires up without any trouble. However, I was able to boot from a backup win2k disk I made and install windows without incident. I am somewhat stumped here.

I can tell you with 99% certainty that the CD-ROM drive needs to be replaced.
Recordable discs don't reflect the laser as well as commercially pressed discs. Because of this, "old" CD-ROM drives and Car Stereos have trouble reading CD-Rs and CD-RWs.
Also, weird disc reading problems can happen just from normal wear & tear.
If you don't have a spare drive lying around, here's a nice CD Burner (http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=170630) for $28 with free 2-day shipping.

strange behavior
go to
http://www.geeks.com/products.asp?cat=CDW
it's a good trustworthy store with low prices on used/refurb stuff
now wouldn't it suck if you ordered a drive and drivers for win2k came burned to CD-R :p

Yeah, my guess is the same as CompuGeeks', the CD-ROM is old. I had an old one that would read CD-R, but not the RW. Replace the CD-ROM with a known good one and see if that doesn't solve it.

Compugeek and I tried to find you a CD rom that comes with a free Celine Dion CD, but they didnt have one. We also expected someone to tell you to replace your power supply, check your cables, check for spyware, upgrade a service pack, or upgrade the archaic firmware in a papyrus zip file.
This is a POS CD rom that isnt worth walking to the street, cut your losses and buy a new one from anywhere that delivers to your province. The crapiest new CD Rom that you can buy, is better than the one you waste your time with.
adios.

could be both are too old to read cd-r(w) try getting one that you know works. I recently went through something similar putting together a machine and found that the 8x CDRW was dead and i had to try a few old CDROM drives i had lying around till it worked.

Thanks guys...though, I am not willing to put money into this machine at this time, so I'll wait until I find something better for less than new prices. After all it is only a 300mhz. Good to see you are still around Krell.

300MHZ quite a speed demon :P~
But hell it works.
Older CDROMS as well as older and some factory cd players in cars will not read burned media. Because there is actually a compliance to being able to read the media.
Best bet is Ebay or the Garage Sales or flea markets hell maybe even a computer bud online locally might have a drive I just gave my old CDRW away otherwise I woulda sent yah that ... old 12x hehe oh well I am sure you'll find something to replace er.
Happy hunting
