View Full Version : Most overrated windows software?

What do you think is the most overrated piece of software available for windows? I've listed the apps which have the loudest following of hysterical girlish fanboys.
firefox
Has to be the winner in my view. Slow, buggy, poor rendering and unexplained crashes make this one of the lamest browsers of recent years.
foobar2000
Not far behind in the lameness stakes. A music player with the worst GUI ever. Poor sound quality and overall bugginess make this one of the weaker mp3 players around.
sygate
Difficult to configure, with a horrible layout and using a ton of RAM. Don't come running to me if hackers take over your PC while running this dreadful piece of snake oil.
videolan
People like this because it's "simple". However in this case "simple" = "no features"
winamp
Worthless, appalling sounding AOL bloatware.

The hard part is... opinion is opinion. Whether or not it is popular opinion in a particular place matters the most on polls. Hell, here I am typing this in my firefox window, listening to my music on winamp, most of which was dl'd over shareaza. Shall I continue listing things on my computer that people think are crap? Maybe I should list my mp3 collection?
Enough Rant.....
My vote goes to sygate, I'd throw in zone alarm as well. Most firewalls are completly counterproductive to broadband internet so far. Untill that changes, I'll just remember to turn my modem off.
-Note... not trying to flame... just ranting

lol well i use firefox winamp and sygate firefox works great for me and the fact it comes so simple out of the box and you just get to add plug ins that you want is great because your only gonna add stuff your gonna use, winamp 5(the last1 by the original team is great i dont think its bloaty and has nice cd ripping too,and finally sygate pro..well iv used norton(wow crapness)zone alarm(useless)and outpost(too bloated) but if you can tel me a better firewall to use then please do.
oo i voted foobar....the fact that its just a explorer window makes it look terrible.

My vote goes to trillian. That piece of software REALLY is not that good. It used to be but now it's just as good as anything else you can use.
Oh before I forget, ad aware is also overrated...

I use trillian, i think its okay. Only thing i have against it is since if has so many features it loads slow.
evilmegaman .. what do you use other then trillian and aim?

I happen to love my sygate (which is configured quite well), I use firefox daily (and have no probs, it's never crashed for me), and listen to all my tunes with Winamp.

i agree, this would have to represent the creme de la creme of this topic
WIN ME was simply an obvious, gratuitous, unnecessary wastes of resources released not out of innovation or technological acumen but only out of a desire to cash in on the passing of an arbitrary point on a calendar

videolan has tons of options in my OPINION; the subtitles (not always detectd though) , plays 99% of video files, but sometimes a little bad with wmv's.

well i think the ones listed are the most under rated, the most over rated would be WMP, MSN Messenger, and IE/Outlook

totaly agree with ourthing2. either grabgrab just had a real bad day or he's a windows-troll. cant tell, dont know him. and firefox by the way is no "windows software", its avialable for many platforms. worst windows software would really have to be windoze xp/outlook/messenger/wmp and IE. greez...

firefox is pretty overrated I like Opera so much better... but I'm not a fanboy. Use IE if you like, or firefox ... Opera is nice but so what if you don't like it.
winamp is WAY overrated with is bloated interface.
sygate firewall .. better than nothing for suckers without NAT routers ... or IPtables. I was a kerio user myself.
Never used foobar, etc
iTunes is probably the most overrated software ever. It sucks so much, I can't see how anyone could want to use it.

I don't see why WinAmp's on that list. Nullsoft wasn't always owned by AOL, and the "spirit" of the software has lived on. I don't use it for every type of media, but I wouldn't mind doing so.
I still haven't tried VideoLan. I'm stuck on ZoomPLayer.

Collected here are several suggestions and common sense ideas for anyone looking to speed up their Winamp, or fix any settings that may be slowing them down.

Of corse Grab is joking. Just fanning the pile of shit. Just like quick time is the best thing since the blow up doll. Everytime I need new Ink or new photoshop I buy a new printer. Its cheaper than buying ink refills, you get photoshop, lots of different high quality gloss paper and sometimes a better printer than the last. So much cheaper than buying the Ink by itself

I would have to vote for winamp with foobar coming in at a close second. Foobar is definately crappier than winamp but winamp is so overhyped that the dissapointment when using it was greater.
Sygate is nothing special but when compared to other software firewalls, it's better than most.
Firefox is a little overrated but great nonetheless.
Videolan (VLC) should not even be on the list. It is the only player out there that I know of that can play audio and video with no codecs and it does it's job well in my opion.

probably notepad. people boast about doing all this l33t programming (mostly talking about HTML herre) in it, but it sucks so bad it can't even handle unix line breaks and has no syntax highlighting
mIRC sucks, it's ugly, slow and just about the worst IRC client of all time (BitchX is good, as is HydraIRC)
Outlook Express, Thunderbird, Pocomail and any other mail client sucks ... except elmo (RIP, elmo) and Pine...
the mp3 codec sucks on account of I said so and ogg is better (jesus said it so it's probably true. we're talking jesus that works down at the drycleaners, here).
google sucks because everyone knows if you wanted to search for say ... poodles you could just go POODLES.COM and if it turned out to be smut then you were wrong, it's poodles.net. only libraries have .org domains.
All word processors suck because latex is for real men with testicles and bowler caps.
except open office might suck a little less. it's still wicked slow though.
the gay printing program that came with my canon printer sucks so I broke the CD in half and used it to poke people for the day, until it was confiscated.
the best program I ever wrote was a virus that propogated to all the computers on my school's network (rather easy when the network admin is dumb enougb to give everyone WRITE ACCESS TO EVERYTHING) and then what it did was print "NOTHING FOR YOU TO SEE HERE, GOODBYE", opened up goatse, killed explorer and used wget to download porn ...in a loop. and set up a simple server that I wrote a client to to execute remote commands.
that's how I learned C network programming, by the way.
Geez I took some serious heat for that program but I managed to convince them that the fact that I wrote it does not mean that I spread it, and so they let me go ... with a restricted computer account. now all I can do is use putty to ssh into my home machine and cause ruin there.
close runner up for second BEST has to be either opera or maybe this tutorial (and linked programs) on brute force craking porn sites (http://nouse.theowned.net/brute.html)
ah, the age old debate of debating sucky software. *cough*

firefox
Haven't tried. I use the basic Mozilla. Got no complaints.
foobar2000
I like the simple GUI, have no problems with sound quality, haven't seen any bugs and most of all I like the fact that it supports .ape and .flac out of the box so I don't have to install the codecs separately.
sygate
Since I think all firewalls are pretty useless I guess this gets my vote. Never tried though.
videolan
Again the best thing is not having to mess up your system with codecs. VLC is all you need to install to play video. Has all the features I have ever needed. Occasionally buggy though, but aren't they all.

IMO an overrated software is Nero. It used to be fast and did it's job well at burning, but now alot of it is just wasted bloatware. When you turn something good into an all in one app it doesn't do anything but fuck it all up.

February 16th, 2005, 03:04 AM
My most overrated software? well Windows Media Player, by a large margin. its visualisations suk, it constantly complains if you dont rip your CD's using DRM and WMA + ripping is slow, It takes ages to load all those webpages and adverts on the main page and generally is a resource hog (actually now that i think of it, its a perfect compliment to windows). I Prefer having specialised software for what i want (e.g. EAC for rippping, WMP classic for movies etc...)
The old WMP was good, and the 'hacked' Windows media Player classic is what I use
Strange though, firefox is by far the best browser i have ever used (and I have used many), it has yet to crash on me once (ive been using it for years), doesnt seem very bloated (i dont use those extenstions or themes) and is more then fast enough for me (IE was a bit faster, but its hardly noticable). Only rival in my eyes is the Opera browser, in which case the fact that Firefox is OSS makes it win over Opera in my view.
Cant comment on the firewall, as My firewall is a Linux box, which has been running well for over a year now
Also Foobar2000, really dont like it, its like a buggy version of winamp (which now IMO, is just too bloated)

February 16th, 2005, 03:27 AM
I must just be a stubborn 'ol coot. Though I haven't tried a lot of other audio players, I just like the interface on winamp. I don't install any of the video crap, cause I like to just add my library and trim, and hate when movies pop up..... (pron). Firefox is a little slower than IE, particularly when running a p2p app and trying to surf, 50% of the time pages won't load. However, not one single crash since I Installed it. All that, and I would love to go back to the old days of napster, especially since I'm now on cable instead of dialup. Be nice to filter connections once again in your searches.... wtf ever happened to that?

It's overrated because Firefox only does what a webbrowser is supposed to do.
Are you at all impressed when I say "I've never been to jail" or "I take care of my kids"? You're supposed to. I hope that doesn't impress you. (Idea taken from Chris Rock talking about the difference between black people and ******s. Hilarious.)

Although praising IE is like praising cancer...
IE 6 (which is basically IE 5 (which it's code is based on IE 4)) is a pretty sickening now with all the security hijacks and very few security updates and Microsoft basically abandoning the program untill someone (FireFox/Mozilla) started to take their ground.
The largest and most beneficial update was centered ONLY for XP users in it's SP2 update, leaving every other IE on other Windows systems to be exposed to serious threats.
Microsoft better make IE 7's code competely different, or this disease will spread for another generation because IE has become the Internet's cancer....
