View Full Version : IDE drives detected as SCSI

A new motherboard is detecting my IDE drives as SCSI.It see's a 160GB Seagate,a 200GB Maxtor and a NEC ND 2500A DVD burner as SCSI as shown in device manager.
The MB is a ECS KT600A.It has 2 IDE connectors and 2 SATA connectors,no SCSI at all.
This is the first board I have installed that has SATA capabilities ,even though I am not using them,so maybe I am not doing something I'm supposed to(disable something, change some jumper, swing a dead marmot over my head while hopping on one leg).
Also the rear line out has no right channel audio(front audio is fine-looks like a bad jack/solder connection). So the board already has one known defect.
Also I can't burn DVD's,but the burner does CD's.While Googling I saw someones post about a NEC 2500 burner doing the same thing and his drives were being detected as SCSI also.He said he was able to burn DVD's after he straightened the IDE-SCSI thing out,but he didn't say how he did it.He just said it took a long time.It was an archived post that leads nowhere so I'm screwed on that road.
I've been chasing this one for 2 days now.If someone has any advice I'd appreciate it.

if you were using an onboard raid controller as a pata controller, i'd say that's normal...but it sounds like this is the normal pata controller...

that's definitely...strange. do you have the latest bios version?

I finally found your manual here: http://www.ecsusa.com/downloads/downloads_main.cfm?to=Motherboard

The excerpts below are from page 39 of your book, or page 61 of the pdf file.

OnChip IDE Device
Scroll to this item and press <Enter> to view the following screen:

SATA Mode [IDE]
IDE DMA Transfer Access [Enabled]
OnChip IDE Channel1 [Enabled]

Primary Slave PIO [Auto]
Secondary Master PIO [Auto]
Secondary Slave PIO [Auto]
Primary Master UDMA [Auto]
Primary Slave UDMA [Auto]
Secondary Master UDMA [Auto]
Secondary Slave UDMA [Auto]
IDE HDD Block Mode [Enabled]

Menu Level
↑ ↓ → ← : Move Enter : Select +/-/PU/PD:Value: F10: Save ESC: Exit F1:General Help

F5:Previous Values F6:Fail-Safe Defaults F7:Optimized Defaults
SATA Mode (IDE)

Use this item to select the mode of the Serial ATA.
IDE DMA Transfer Access (Enabled)

This item allows you to enabled the transfer access of the IDE DMA.
On-Chip IDE Channel 0/1 (Enabled)

Use these items to enable or disable the PCI IDE channels that are integrated
on the motherboard.

IDE Prefetch Mode (Enabled)

The onboard IDE drive interface supports IDE prefetching, for faster drive
access. If you install a primary and secondary add-in IDE interface, set this
field to Disabled if the interface does not support prefetching.

IDE Primary/Secondary Master/Slave PIO (Auto)

Each IDE channel supports a master device and a slave device. These four
items let you assign which kind of PIO (Programmed Input/Output) is used by
IDE devices. Choose Auto to let the system auto detect which PIO mode is
best, or select a PIO mode from 0-4.

IDE Primary/Secondary Master/Slave UDMA (Auto)

Each IDE channel supports a master device and a slave device. This motherboard
supports UltraDMA technology, which provides faster access to IDE
devices.

If you install a device that supports UltraDMA, change the appropriate item on
this list to Auto. You may have to install the UltraDMA driver supplied with this
motherboard in order to use an UltraDMA device. . . . hint

You may also need to flash your BIOS, I advise you to use the utility available on the site.

There are a lot of 3rd party BIOS rewrites for these MBs, thats not reassuring

Good Luck

The CD that came with the MB doesn't have a UDMA driver.I'll try to hunt one down after I get back from the store. Thanks Krell.

Google a search for the UDMA or chipset drivers for your VIA chipset, that should do it.

WEll I found the UDMA driver but when I tried to replace "VIA PCI IDE Bus driver" with VIA Bus master PCI IDE Driver(UltraDMA) it hangs the computer.

There is a BIOS upgrade dated 12-2-04 I am going to try. The reason for the upgrade is "To support AMD K7 Athlon new CPU.CPU ID= 6Aoh.I'm not sure what this means, I can't belive that Athlon's weren't fully supported .Looking in my registry my current BIOS is dated 7-7-04,so it probaly can't hurt.Just another BIOS flash.Nothing can go wrong.Nope.

Updated to the newest BIOS successfully but no change.Using Winflash was kind of cool.First time I ever flashed a BIOS without booting from a floppy.
To bad it didn't help.Any more thoughts CPU,Krell, anyone?

I would try to remove the current drivers from Device manager and install these drivers, then reboot, see what you get.
