Windows xp problem

I thought I'd start a new thread on this. Firstly my problem. I've got a virus that seems to go through a reformat. We've tried using my sampson 160gb drive on it's own and are still having problems.
It doesn't seem to be sasser. None of the removal tools flaggs it as sasser. I don't know where to turn as virus programs won't instal.

Right now we're trying to instal norten 2004[legal] again. It's instaling very very slowly. Please somebody help me!

Sorry, don't know what to tell you except keep at it since we don't know what virus it is! Use restore, then try to remove all traces of virus on the system! Or, you might want to get a copy of DBAN and wipe your hard drive clean for good, before you do a clean install of Windows again.

well norten finally instaled. It's killed several w32.spibot's , evil bitches.

disable windows restore function. Sometimes viri reside in system restore.

how do I disable system restore? im in safe mode, and everything is gone accept for one file.

i'm rusty on this but i imagine you go into the control panel , system and find the retore tab and cut it off . or go into administrative tools and services and disable windows restore. I'm not positive what is available in safe mode.

You disable the restore before you go to safe mode. Before you do that though you should run what ever anti-spyware program you have first and maybe even do a defrag to. Once in safe mode run your Norton virus scan. Make sure that you have the most current virus updates so as to not miss any thing that may be new. Once you are sure that you have successfully found and repaired all your problems restart you system in the regular Window's mode and then turn your restore back on.

System Restore Settings are found by right clicking on my computer hitting properties then hit the advanced tab of the window that pops up and select startup and recovery settings. From there you can disable system restore.

Thanks a lot everyone for your help. I'm running DBAN and am gonna do a completely fresh[hopefully] instal of xp once again. This should work!

Hey, just a thought for anyone having a similar problems, you can always use a bootable version of Linux (like Slax or Mandrakemove) and install some Linux antivirus software that detects Windows viruses (like Clam AV). Because it's a different OS, Windows viruses won't be able to get it. I've never actually done this, but, I figure if worse comes to worse, it's a viable solution.
