Ok I was using sygate firewall with avg free but I noticed alot of ping time outs etc. My downloads werent going well on newsgroups as it once did, I would ping out on irc etc.
If you are having problems with downloads or something it might be sygates settings.
Anyways I have decided to use Kerio personal firewall. Since I changed yesterday I have no problems. I am also using nod32 antivirus and I dont regret it.
Just a tip if you having problems and cant figure it out, its sygate, well it was for me anyways.
This sweet guy helped me out. Peace

Is there any disadvantage to just using WinXP-SP2's firewall?
I'm also behind a router.

A router, and XPs firewall only block incoming, and not outgoing. So just suppose that you did a bad thing and got a trojan while trying some cracks. Neither of those would block the trojan from trying to ping someone. I would recommend another firewall to work along with your router.

Sygates firewall does offer far greater protection then other firewalls basically showing you and logging any internet activity all together... Some of the problems simply lie in the way you block certain processes and allow other processes. It has a variety of options and even allows you to remember certain things... However sometimes I did notice a bug that it would malfunction when using the program and it would block something from popping up or comming through this was easily fixed by cleaning the offline content and cookies and then restarting the firewall.... But I fond the best way to run it for me was just not set it to remember anything and just click yes to allow the programs which you wanted to access the net.
There is built in allowances for networking to so that you can allow network printer and filesharing as well... So far it seems to be the most secure firewall I have used.
But please by all means CJ let us know in the future what you think about Kerio and its security as well as functionality. Always good to have differnt alternatives to programs.

I don't use Sygate anymore...but you need to uncheck the Box about Blocking IPs for 10 Seconds..or something like that...this will stop your IRC ping time outs...Sygate thinks it's an attack because of all the IPs your connected to.

I'm also behind a router.I am using SP2's firewall with a router. I have not had any problems and I've been using it since it came out. I have tried various security port scans too. I know people seem to hate this firewall, but it works for me. Go ahead and hack me...you won't find anything that I don't share anyways.

R and R, thats fine for you, but it certainly was not enough for a friend of mine, as he had 3 trojans doing their thing, and if he had been using a better firewall he may have noticed what was going on. Notice I said may. LOL

I had quite a few friends with similar problems and they basically rarely even use there internet connection other then for emails... Kinda strange but email is a virus spreader as well I suppose but yeah I wouldnt suggest that SP2 is secure enough for them as they are very unaware of there computer issues and how to fix them... So I surely would reccomend that if you dont know enough to fix your own PC to learn for one of course but also in the mean time use something a bit more secure. Sure nothing is fool proof and thats understood by everyone but windows firewall though a good addition dosen't offer that great of security in comparison and they are both free. I guess its all a matter of position but I reccomend something other then windows to most folks that just plain think the worlds going to end when there virus or spyware scan detects something and they think there PC is broke.
I'm with you hunter but that dosent mean that XP firewall isnt enough in some cases cause sure it is enough for some but the avg user of a PC being unaware I wouldnt reccomend it to.

The best for me is 2wire router which has firewall and norton that blocks worms and allow individual programs to connect to the internet..

well i had been using sygate firewall for way over 3 years or more. But as of now I will stick to kerio.
Sygate has an option that cant be unchecked in the advance options, and i am no longer satisfied with it.
kerio works best.
Best choice I made.
