DVP642 vs DRC240N: home DVD/Divx/Xvid

I'm shopping for an inexpensive alternative to playing xvid/divx on an xbox. Amzon has both the Philips DVP642 and the RCA DRC240N. Who has used either or both?

From various reviews it seems like Philips isn't planning on releasing new firmware therefore no new codecs. I've not found much interesting on the RCA.

I have the Philips DVP642/37 and it works well for playing divx/xvid movies!

I have the Philips DVP642 a good little DVD player, takes up very little space. Good at playing most Divx files, although about 1 in 10 will have problems playing even with the firmware update. Sometimes it loads slow and crashes and reboots occasionally when playing divx. DVD's play fine, and if you like the crappy SVCD format it plays that good as well.

I also have a 642 though I reccomend it I suggest that you stick with encoding and downloading movies espicially newer ones in divx format... Something about the XviD 1.0.3 Codec that is not liked by the player which either causes movies to become jerky and audio to become skippy throught the course of the movie or it crashes with an error all together not all movies are like this but nearly every movie I played in divx played flawlessly.

I'd say to go with the phillips but the choice is up to you. Just for reference upon testing Divx Pro VS Xvid 1.0.3 divx pro for me had a better compression to quality ratio... Though I like the idea of Xvid and it being an open source project as well... Also playing Xvid 1.0.3 movies in there I had 8 of 10 movies fail then I reencoded to divx and they played flawlessly. The phillips 642 has a couple little issues but so did every other dvd/divx player that I have tested I believe that at current the divx outpreforms most every divx player and is the best bang for its buck...

At 69.99 at your local wally world you cant beat it.
