I've been trying to get any filesharing software to work and it just isn't happening.
tried opening ports n stuff,no good.tried also simply allowing each filesharing application access in my xp firewall and they each connect ok but when the file i'm after says downloading next to it i get no download rate and nothing happens.
i tried getting in touch with my isp but as i didn't know what to say other than filesharing programs not downloading they just gave me a load of crap about how filesharing in america has been deemed a federal offence and as a result aol have limited the bandwidth allocated to filesharing applications.
this is particularly annoying to me as i live in england not the usa.
each time i try to run a port test i get this message: Testing ip: cache-los-ad07.proxy.aol.com (195.93.21.103).
could anyone tell me what this means,i'm at my whits end here coz the SOB'S at aol have me under contract for 12 months so i'm unable to switch isp's and need to get this one to work properly.

You can switch ISPs as AOL are not providing the unlimited internet access which they advertise.
Filesharing is most definately 100% not a federal offence in America. How can sending a file between two computers be an offence? That would screw over a lot of companies who share files using windows. They are currently debating the legitamacy of Grokster in the supreme court, but there is nothing to debate about BitTorrent. Even the grokster case is debating the software, not the users of the software.
If they talk about people getting sued, then point out that not a single one has been convicted. Instead, the RIAA (which includes AOL Time Warner) have bullied the file sharers, forcing them to accept an out of court settlement. These cases are civil, not criminal (hence not a felony)
In England, the British Phonographic Industry are the only people to have taken action against file sharing, and even they praise the technology - just not what it is being used for.
Perhaps you should ask if since we are on American law now, they think that it would be OK for you to walk around with a gun.
Tell AOL that you need BitTorrent to work so you can get the latest Linux distributions, movie trailers and some other Open Source software. If they don't allow it, then they are not keeping their end of the contract which promises unlimited internet, so demand that it is terminated at no charge. If they say it is in the contract, ask what section.
Good luck bud, don't take any crap.

Install Ares www.aresgalaxy.org. Do not install any optional componants during installation. Agree to let Ares work it's way through your firewall.
Search for a pop song, whether you like pop or not. A top ten rap song would be perfect.
Download the one with the most stars. What happens?

the download starts right away but i don't get why ares works perfect when shareaza and emule don't.
i mean fair enough emule is more complicated but i used shareaza on my 56k before i signed up for broadband and the downloads actually started (unlike now).
also i'm a sucker for rare files and it sucks that emule don't work.

well, i've always had good luck getting ares to connect through firewalls - some programs are just better at it then others. For example, a friend of mine is at the University of Whitewater, where they have a firewall on the network. For the life of him, he can't get Limewire to connect. However, Ares connects with no problems.
My guess is just that Ares is better at NAT translation - and networks, such as eDonkey, have always been nortorious for not letting people to connect very well through firewalls, routers, etc.

emule should connect even with NAT problems, it would just be slow.
Check out the Shareaza forums, they may be more specialist than the peeps here.

Yep the ole ISP switch filesharing it's self is legal just the sharing of certain materials which is deemed illegal...
Should be something that'll work its a matter of ports really...
The developers of P2P should make it manditory that every update needs to be taken then make the default ports differnt ports upon every update as well.
