I am returning an external Pinnacle PCTV USB2 TV tuner today. I was very disappointed at it's performance. It kept crashing every time I tried to record anything. The worst of it was Pinnacle's hidden $5 online charge if you want mpeg 2 format capability. I do not recommend buying this unit. So, my question is what is good. I was thinking about ATI's tuner card, but there are so many choices now that I can't decide. I do prefer external as I'm running out of PCI slots.
Thanks...

I am leaning towards ATI, but I don't need the all in wonder since I already have 128 mb graphics.

You could get the plain 'ol TV Wonder http://www.ati.com/products/tvwonderve/
It's the AIW without the 3D.

Rack, is that Pinnacle online charge a one-time thing for a serial? If so, I know Pinnacle Studio 9, which is you know, around... has the same thing. Maybe it would work for you.

Thanks, but I've looked for that already. The one I needed was PCTV USB2 mpeg2. It is only a one time charge, but for the price of the tuner, you'd think it would be included.

It's time to digress to camp fires and moss.

Technology = chainsaw.

It does where I live...in Sooke BC. I would be willing to bet more people own chainsaws than computers.

btw, I picked up an ATI tuner for very cheap. It had been out of the box and the store manager gave it to me for $100 cn. It does everything I wanted it to. I can now back up all my VHS to DVD, which I have been wanting to do for a long time.
Thanks to all! Your opinions and expertise is appreciated.

I use an external DVDxpress to record anything I want to DVD or my hard drive. Needs usb 2.0 and the quality is outstanding.

Get the Plextor M402U you can capture direct to divx, Mpeg4, Mpeg2DVD, Mpeg2SVCD, Mpeg1, Mpeg1VCD...

Basically you can capture to any format you wish and at good quality as well.

Owned and tested without error this thing produces beautiful captures and it uses an onboard hardware encoder.

Buy it man you will not be disappointed though a bit pricey if they woulda had this sucker out a while back I woulda saved a lot of money...

I have owned about 9 differnt capture devices nothing has even come close to what this offers for the price hell I even owned the 400 dollar dazzel units two of them and they are junk compared to this.
