Operation Digital Gridlock, announced Aug. 25, targeted illegal file-sharing of copyrighted materials over five P2P networks that belonged to an online group of hubs known as the Underground Network. These networks required their users to share large quantities of computer files with other network users, all of whom could download each others' shared files.

From around August 2002 through August 2004, Trowbridge owned, maintained, operated and moderated a direct connect hub named the "Movie ®oom" and Chicoine owned, maintained, operated, and moderated a hub named "Ãçhènøn's Alley TM."

During the investigation, government agents downloaded 35 copyrighted works worth $4,820.66 from Chicoine's hub and more than 70 copyrighted works worth $20,648.63 from Trowbridge's hub. Both men pleaded guilty to acting for commercial advantage or private financial gain because, in addition to distributing unauthorized copyrighted works, their hubs operated in order to obtain valuable infringing works from others.

"These prosecutions, the first federal enforcement actions ever taken against criminal copyright theft over peer-to-peer networks, send a powerful message to cyber-criminals," said Kenneth Wainstein, interim U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. "Like the defendants who pleaded guilty today, those who steal the work of others over the Internet stand to face serious consequences."

The maximum penalty for a first-time offender convicted of conspiracy to commit felony criminal copyright infringement is five years in prison, a $250,000 fine, restitution to the victims and the forfeiture and destruction of infringing copies and all equipment used to manufacture infringing copies. Trowbridge and Chicoine will be sentenced April 29. :ass

what is gained from operating a public hub other than attracting attention to yourself from the wrong crowd? the honor of scanning for leechers and cheaters all day? the pleasure of writing new bots, then hoping they won't crash your shit? the convenience of having to leave your computer on 24/7 so that you don't get a 1000 angry emails from strangers?

Well I see he got banned. Anyway I run a hub and am proud of it. Been doing it for 4 years now and yes it is very private. Not a real big headache to run one just takes a lot of my time at times to keep it running smooth. Also the expense to have a dedicated line and pc for it as well. But it is fun and one of my many hobbies. Just thought I would throw my 2 cents in.

I've operated a hub in the past but not for years. At the time it was easier to operate and use then IRC, and I had a Gov. T1 line to operate it on, which was sweet for the time. However, it always felt like a bust and it still does. I turned to newsgroups which to me were easier then IRC and exponentially safer then DC. I just can't believe its taken this long for someone to get caught using it.

Newsgroups are a Godsend. I would strongly recommend ditching DC in favor of them.

I'm in www.torrentbits2.org =) Its around 22500 members.. They are pruning users by banning leechers and letting some in at a time. Then www.oink.me.uk has about 49990 members.(50,000 is the set limit) So the members torrentbits are release group operators.. Alot of people running smaller torrent sites get alot of their stuff from torrentbits2.org.

Newsgroups are not DC and they are all open as far as I know. It does require a news server which some ISP's opperate like Verizon. If your ISP dos not maintain a decent sever then you must pay money to use a Public server like Giganews. Esentially your buying bandwidth.
Good groups are:

alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.complete_cd -> For an absurd amount of music
alt.binaries.cd.image.xbox -> For an absurd amount of Games
alt.binaries.movies.divx -> For an absurd amount of Movies

But there about 50,000 active groups besides these. and they are all Public
