I need instructions on how I can set up a file on my computer to be downloaded by others, without compromising my security too much. Kind of like how some people host whole websites on their comp. In this case, just one 47megabyte file.
It's not as easy as saying 'use an instant messenger', because I want to post a link for download on a smaller website for people who actually know of it to download. Makes sense ? Probably not.
Anyway, if you can understand this dumbass post.. AND have an answer, then please share. :) Use simplicity please!
I also realize that this would bog down my internet connection a great deal, but it is only for a small amount of time. Anywho, thanks for even reading this. :)
edit: perhaps what I'm looking to do is set up some kind of FTP, however I'm really clueless past that.

i would suggest getting an ftp server like serv-u
once you get that run the setup install the program
and they hav an automated ftp setup, create an account for the people who want the file or just leave it on anonymous
get your ip from www.myipadress.com(this is pretty trivial :))
and your set
i don't think its going to be too hard fora master poster like you but if anything happens just reply and i would help

Use 'bad blue' available for free here http://www.badblue.com. It is dead simple web server software for your PC. You can set up username and password for your private users. If you have a dynamic IP address (i.e it changes everytime you log on the internet), you will need to setup a forwarding web address, you can do that free here http://www.dyndns.org, you will get a web address to give to your friends which will alwys point to your PC (you must configure their IP address through your firewall though).
Its really easy to use badblue, and lets run your own web server from your home PC.

MiniShare is meant to serve anyone who has the need to share files to anyone, doesn't have a place to store the files on the web, and does not want or simply does not have the skill and possibility to set up and maintain a complete HTTP-server software...
The files that the user wants to share are drag'n'dropped on the application (or added via a standard file dialog) and the URLs for the shared files can be easily copied on the clipboard (with the IP address pointing to the user's computer). Since this application doesn't use any P2P network and only the selected files are shared (i.e. unlike most HTTP-servers that directly use the file system), so the user does not have to feel insecure.

I think once you upload it, you can give multiple people a chance to get it by giving them the email address and allowing access. But if your using your pc as a FTP client. Go for it.

Napho beat me to it. HFS is so easy, all you need to know is the IP address and how to drag and drop. I reccommend a port change if your ISP doesn't like servers.
