Here's a question for the good Dr...
I've been using Kazaa Lite for a long time, mostly for mp3s and movies...
I was thinking of using it to download some popular word processing and spreadsheet applications.
What are the risks here? Say I run things through my virus software before installing- what are the chances I get bogus files (or worse) virus infected or otherwise manipulated software that I may regret?
Wanted to get a basic sense of how others have fared when downloading software, wheter utilities, games, etc.
Thanks

There's risk involed in downloading exes, get a virus scanner and keep it up to date, scan each file before executing and you'll be OK. Nothing gets past Norton Anti Virus.

Well before ppl start saying Sig2dat (which, is, BTW, a great utility) let me just tell you can't rely on it for everyting, there is some rarer software (or whatever) that you might be looking for that sig2dat can't start it for you, simply beacause it's rare. Either way I don't really think you need sig2dat if you are smart and use common sense when looking for a particular program and not just download the first "adobe photoshop 7.0" file sized 120KB whose tag is "now this is some nice stuff ;-)". I've only used sig2dat a couple of times but I could do fine without it, just pay attention to the files sizes, comments, keywords and number of users sharing that file, as well as other options you might have (within the search results) and compare them. It's not rocket science just plain common sense.

yeah... i agree. checking similarities is not just somthing to do with .exes tho... do it with everything. movies, music, etc. its good practice, your less likely to get a fake, or a virus. i remember when i just got into p2p. i thought i found a program that "speeds up your internet. get 22 KB/s on dial-up" so, me being an internet newb, i downloaded it, and opened it without checking it 4 viruses, etc. as soon as it opened, it started a script that locked up my mouse and tried deleting the c:/windows folder. thankfully, i thought quick and flipped the power switch, and no damage was done. but i was within seconds of reinstalling windows. not fun. moral? be careful.

the hashfiles the are supported by edonkey insyre you get a good file.
check out http://sharereactor.com and look in their software section. If you want a file, install edonkey and then click on a hashlink. You can find just about anything you want on edonkey, also use their search engine if you can't find a file you want at that site. http://jigle.com

Click here and place the file in your edonkey folder. You must update each time you login for best results. Also visit the edonkey forum to learn more and get a automatic upadeting software if you don't like to do it manualy each time.
Edonkey servers: http://ocbmaurice.dyndns.org/pl/slist.pl/server.met?download
