I was thinking about crazy case modding and wondered if anyone knows of cables that connect from PCI cards to the motherboard, instead of the cards connecting directly at a right angle to the board? or is that necessary? Else I might have to experiment....

I know you can get 90 degree connectors that will allow you to place the card parallel to the MoBo, but I've never seen a cable. It wouldn't supprise me in the least if they exist, though.

flex cables exist, but according to google they cost between 50 and 100 bucks each (that i saw)

example, 75 bucks http://www.mycableshop.com/sku/PCI-FLEX-04.htm

I wonder why they are so expensive. Sure, there are quite a few wires, but hell... for $50 plus, I'd make them.

true, but i think this particular price point is because of the particular customers that use them--corporate and industrial applications

smaller clearances and odd configurations (especially industrial) make this very much worth 100 bucks to those customers

Yes, I would have to agree there.

Do "they" make external power supplies? I haven't been able to find one.
I would love something like that.
It would leave enough room for me to install a hamster running in a wheel.

PCI has strict limits on impedance and length. Making your own extender is asking for data corruption.

Brilliant Ogi! Cheers a million.

But are PCI Express cards bigger han standard? do they have a longer slot? I haven't read much about them yet. Mainly designed for graphics cards and big external storage i imagine?
