lets define try to define 1st, 2nd and 3rd gen of p2p.
dont flame me, i know u all know this but even then enlighten me.
1st generation was definetely NapStEr.
napster was a simple p2p(FATHER), which had a community of music loving people, it didnt had swarm, partial or any other kinda feature. one user connected to second user to d/l a file 'a.mp3', using only that user, which resulted in incomplete d/ls. (but even then napster was good.)
then came Audiogalaxy(it was fully working when napster collapsed), others were still in development.
then came winmx with opennap server.
then came gnutella
and so on till bittorrent, ants etc. came
and one more thing 3rd gen(if tats correct), p2p will not only have anonymous d/ls plus other new improvements like upload=download(like in bittorrent), coz uploading obviously means faster d/ls.multiple network support.
and if possible, reply in technical language. :tol

What is 1st, 2nd and 3rd Generation P2P?
1st generation centralised like Napster and Bit Torrent tracker/website (Can be closed down)
2nd generation decentralised like gnutella,eDonkey and Kazza (Can't be closed down but users can be sued)
3rd generation anonymous (source of file hidden) and decentralised like MUTE and ANts P2P(Can't be closed down and users can't be sued)
BTW according to ww.slyck.com 3rd generation is any application that has fanboys like ES5.

dont be mislead by the spam tactics of these `3rd generation` spammers. generations usually signify improvements from one generation to another. these self spammed 3rd generation bullshit apps are a huge step backwards , taking away everything that people enjoy seeing in file sharing and adding unproven claims of anonymity
3rd generation is nothing but a buzz word for these fanboys to use to try and get a few users on their unknown networks . its bullshit that the reason no one gets complaints from using ants is because its anonymous. simply no one gives the slightest fuck about this network as it has no more than 5 users on at a time , why waste time and resources on something that will amount to nothing??
3rd generation = bullshit

but considering bittorrent 1st gen p2p is wrong.
if napster was 1st gen and da father of p2p then i think bittorrent is da mother coz it changed the way we share files. we can share large files wthout the risk of fakes. and it has so many advanced features, only it is web-based does'nt makes it 1st gen. and why ebryone is stressing "Anonymous" and "3rd gen". it is a required feature but not a criteria. try to thnk in a conceptual way.

BitTorrent would be classified in the area of decentralized, because it cannot be effectively shut down. Suprnova got shut down, oh nos!!! says all the kiddies, but in reality there are still thousands of torrents available, and if one tracker is taken down, there are thousands to take its place, and unlike Napster that took a huge, expensive indexing server to fuction (that lead to it's death) - any person with a computer can run a Bittorrent tracker - and guess what? If you want it to be private - Bittorrent can indeed be - setup your own tracker and only share the torrent with friends.
Ants and all the so called "3rd gen" programs are indeed NOT 3rd generation, because they don't effectivly carry forth what we have established as file-sharing. Once they can let me download a movie at 650 KBps while remaining completly anonymous, I'll let them call themselves 3rd gen. Until then, it's for dialup speeds only.

You are right Bit Torrent is not 1st gen - The point I was trying to make was that it does have some centralisation (1st generation) the tracker and websites like Suprnova but it is mostly 2nd generation plus.
Most P2P programs have some degree of centralisation. Some use web caches to boot strap, ANts P2P uses IRC to bootstrap.
If you follow the news you will see that the biggest issue facing P2P file sharing currently is copyright holders not recognising file sharing as "fair use" and therefore suing users and application makers.
To be a 3rd generation application it must have a solution for this legal threat.
Napster was closed down by the law as it was centralised.
The law was unable to close down Kaaza as it is decentralised.
However, users are now being sued.
So the next step is to protect users.
RIAA/MPAA biggest weapon currently is not legal action but PR it is paying people to post to forums such as Zeropaid to discredit 3rd generation applications to kill them at birth.
This is because if 3rd generation takes off users will be imune to the RIAA/MPAA's legal threats.

Sad sad very sad.
As I said "according to www.slyck.com 3rd generation is any application that has fanboys like ES5".
If you were the RIAA/MPAA what would you do if new applications were been DEVELOPED that would make you LEGALLY IMPOTENT?
I know what I would do I would brainwash/pay people to flame every mention of such programs to kill them at birth.
I would also link them to kiddy porn and terrorism.
Think about it - who wins if NO THIRD GEN PROGRAMS ARE DEVELOPED?

So your way of helping to acheive your aim of a 3rd gen program , "let[ting] me download a movie at 650 KBps while remaining completly anonymous", is to do what exactly?
Is it to snipe, winge, moan, grumble while these "3rd gen" applications are being developed?
Then when they are developed to use them for FREE and complain about the next development.
Try a 3rd gen program - post an assessment - we all like a good laugh.
The only sensible thing in your post was to say that they were slow but this is being remedied see here (http://www.zeropaid.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=25411)

I don't believe that anyone on this forum has any affiliation with the RIAA/MPAA, including myself. Just because we don't like a blatant idea at trying to anonymize people's activities does not mean we are paid off to do it.
As for trying a "3rd gen program" I did try MUTE a month or so ago, and liked it overall, although it didn't have much content. It's nice that the developer's keep to themselves and don't announce every daily release of the program.
As for trying Ants... I went ahead and downloaded the installer.. and guess what - the developer is using an expired trial copy of InstallAnywhere to package his installers, and thusly I could not install it. That's really too bad.

I don't class BitTorrent as 2nd or 3rd generation - I class it as first. Yes, it's changed the way we share, but it's a simple protocol - it runs through a central server (the tracker).

there is no such thing as a third generation p2p program, dont let others tell you otherwise.
You want to know whats third generation tho? wireless seems more third generation then anything else.
and i am third generation, since my mom was second generation and my grandmother was the first generation.
get my drift?
how the hell does anyone classify something as third generation.

I'm second generation English. My dad was first and I'm second.
Don't worry about what box you want to put a program in - it's just file sharing - and we all like it that's why we're here.

Once again Hornet comes in, spams his stupid program, and tries to increase his user base to 7. Stop spamming your damn program.
If anything, your network will become a haven for kiddie porn sharers. They would remain anonymous.
And if you decided to monitor them, that means you must monitor everyone, and in the end, this anon programs arent so Anon no more.
