Kinda funny aint it, its like having a 200MB virus. I have NEVER been able to fully get rid of any of their "utilities". Thats why I only use ghost.
A VERY good utility pack is VCOM system suite. 39.99 and you get ALL the stuff that norton give you cheaper and performs better. Or if you just want antivirus, try CA's etrust line(if you dont end up liking AVG).
Norton stuff has been known for a while, and everyone I know at penn state has had problems with uninstalling it.

the problem maybe nortons is running when you try to uninstall, try to prevent it to load on start up, re-start in safe mode and delete Nortons in "control panel" add/remove programs section, then re-start your computer again. good luck

I used to have the "right-click file/folder freeze" problem. I think I did something about disabling icon images. Not totally sure, although you might want to make sure the Norton and Symantec services are all disabled. (start>run> type services.msc)

To remove Norton Antivirus 2003, you may need to find Rnav2003.exe & Windows Scripts 5.6 - scriptten.exe for Windows 2000 & XP from Norton Support site.
There were so many registry entries & utilities from NAV features, it was a pain to remove for me too. I will not use Norton AV anymore if I can, as most of the new features these days just make it a even bigger resource hog. I only need a simple AV with good virus definitions database thats fast & lean!

If you cant get rid of it, have you thought about running windows setup again and reinstalling whatever windows file it royalty fucked? Not reformatting the drive, just reinstall windows core files.
Might be a pain in the ass but norton digs itself in pretty deep.

Ya i downloaded NAV 2005 to try it on my old (950 Mhz) laptop. Damn near froze the thing for 2 minutes each time on startup. "Uninstalled" it after a bit and it sped right up again. Norton is good but uses way to many resources.

Go to their website and download the free program called symclean. It gets rid of the real deep nasty stuff. Then throw away your Symantec disk.
I have a legal copy of Systemworks 2003 and won't use it.

I've tried almost all of them and I am now using the free AVG.Why not? It's easy and free.I've been to more than one questionable site and have never had anything go undetected by it and it doesn't have the bloat of Norton,Panda,Mcafee, etc.I've also tried Nod,Fsecure,Mvk,Kapersky, etc.

Well, you could just allow it to remain installed but DONT enable it. Just let it sit there. Thats what I have my aunts computer doing, I wont even try to rip it out for fear of what it will do to her WinME install.
