DVD files keep stopping in playback - help

I've converted a number of .avi movie files to DVD (.vob) format, using both WINAMP and DVDSanta. Hardware is a 2ghz P4 with 1gb RAM.
Then burn them on to DVD-R using CopyToDVD.
On playback (using XBOX) they start OK, and get someway in to movie but then they all (at differant points in time for each movie) start to stall, ie picture freezes and sound stops.
Any ideas why , or how I can diagnose where prob is.

Have you tried playing them in a different dvd player?

Are you using Memorex DVDr's? Just kidding. unless you are, then throw them away.

I've never had a problem with memorex dvds.
Maybe I just got lucky,and kept gettin the good packs. :tilted

NeroVision Express is great for .AVI to DVD. It's included in the latest Nero Burning ROM release.

Just go to "Make DVD" --> "DVD Video" --> "Add Video Files"

It will transcode and burn your project... even make menus and chapters if you wish.

By and large Memorex is a great brand. Been using the brand forvever with no problem. It seems though, as if one maker of the 50 pack DVDr's has been making some funky discs and not just one or two. When you get a bad batch you can throw away the whole spindle.

That is the problem when a company wants to be able to bring the price down on a product,they tend to try cheaper manufacturers or buy cheaper parts.
This way they can still make a profit.

I myself am willing to pay a little more if I know I'm getting a good product in return.

I think if u have non-standard mpeg-2 bitrates or resolutions, a dvd will stall on older dvd players(a problem I am having now). But I would not think that an Xbox would have that problem. Try playing back a DVD on another dvd player(something new if possible) and see if u get the same problem.

Hrmmm bit rates and resolutions non standard may always me an issue try using DVD Decryptor and DVD Shrink for the 1 2 Punch. If you have Xbox Media Center I dunno as if I recalll correct it supports many forms of audio and video I dont know the whole scoop on it but I know it plays quite a bit... Another thing is like some videos got that new lame copy protection in it like Resident Evil Apocalypse this was fixed by using various methods like VOB Blanker or now the even easier solution the updated DVD Decryptor...

Dunno strange one but DVD Decryptor and DVD shrink are free give em a try some forums to check for issues may be like www.doom9.org or www.vcdhelp.com these forums may point you in the right direction.

Use Ritek's / Ridata

I also have been having these problems.

I have the TDK 880N with the latest bios for the drive and use DVD shrink .

For some reason if i burn the back ups at 8X they get this way glitches and pauses halfway thru the movie.

But if i burn them at 4X they come out 100% perfect.

So i say make sure you have the latest vesion of your bios for the drive and use Ritek/Ridata disc ( find these online ). and Burn them at 4X then check out your results. If not burn them at 4X using the same disc's you have benn using and dont put any labels on them.

Thats the way i solve my problems.

Follow the process of elimination. First rule out the xbox. If it plays fine in computer or stand alone dvd player then it is xbox. If it does not play right anywhere try different media. Still no difference then it is your encodes that suck.

And if all else fails, replace all of your hardware and start over.

Matilda99's trying to get transcoded .avi files to DVD format. Though great apps, they don't deal with that.

MainConcept MPEG encoder is very good as well, Matilda99. Many people swear by TMPGEnc DVD Source Creator. Some other encoders are: Cucusoft Video Converter, Zealot All Video Convertor, and WinAVI Video Convertor.

Sometimes a particular app won't produce useable a mpeg2 if it runs across a corrupted .avi section. Then you move onto the next one and do another transcode. It's just the name of the game.
