I use 'system mechanic' to tune my modem to its best.
But your only gonna get what the telephone system will allow, which is usually in my case 3-4kb/s.
Don't believe the hype that some software companies would have u believe!
You can only get what your given.

In fact a few of those "connection speed-ups" are chock full of stuff you have to fight to remove. I know people who have reformatted to finally get it all.

lol,i think u mean network card!
Telewest are charging £25 connection fee at the moment with free network card supplied and fitted to your pc.
Then £25 a month if your on their phone line.
Might go for it myself:mellow

Although you aren't going to speed up the data transfer at all by installing any more software, there are alternatives to waiting as long for the file. eMule is using a new compression technology, which, essentially, speeds up your download because it can decompress a smaller file into the full file. Get OGG audio if you don't want to wait for mp3s, etc.
Technically, 56K modems are capable of transmitting data alot faster than the phone line can, but due to fcc regulations and lack of sufficient compression technology, that doesn't usually happen. If you came up with a faster compression algorithm for your modem, you could install the compressor on the server you hook into and the decompressor on your IP stack, then you could download more data in the new compressed format faster than normal.
