I'm just trying to get rid of Windows Messenger, I have MSN and use it to chat, but the freakin Windows Messenger always starts on startup and signs into my msn account. This is very frustrating especially if u consider the fact that ppl can see you online when really it’s just another user logged into the same computer. Windows doesn’t allow me to delete it because it says that it will affect how my internet explorer works. I've tried to prevent it from starting up with "startup control panel 2.8" but every time I uncheck the box, it will come back as checked in on next startup..haha please help :(

Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger are two totally different things.

You can disable Windows Messenger in "Services" in "Administrative Tools" located in the "Control Panel". Right-click "Messenger" and change startup type to "Disabled",

As for MSN Messenger, xp-antispy.org can get rid of it.

Reinstall MSN Messanger and use the popular Messenger Plus! addon if you need to use MSN... otherwise Trillian ( www.trillian.cc ) is a popular alternative.

Um that messenger service is completely different from Windows Messenger... Just look at the description in the service window.

Check out this website XP Tweaks (http://www.helpwithwindows.com/WindowsXP/tune-05.html)

If you want to remove Windows Messenger v4.7.. do this:
- Click on Start.
- Click on Run.
- Copy and paste this line into the box: RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

You're done! Im not sure if you'll have to reboot, when i did it, i had to reboot (i think)

Why do that, when it's simple to disable and re-enable? Check out the link I provided above.

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove...is only necessary when no service packs have been installed.

MSG plus is bundled with ad-ware, but you can opt out if you want (I think).

So make sure you read the EULA, just dont accept right away.

Control Panel-->Add/Remove Programs-->Add/Remove Windows Components-->Uncheck "Windows Messenger"-->Click "Next".

Disabling that Windows Messaging Service he brought up is a very good idea too.

Disabling that Windows Messaging Service he brought up is a very good idea too. That is true. Unless you already have XP SP2 and then M$ has disabled it for you free of charge.

Thanks dude.

That is true. Unless you already have XP SP2 and then M$ has disabled it for you free of charge.

Actually, I followed Malakai1911's advice and it didn't work. Or rather, it was already disabled. As soon as I started MSN Messenger, it told me that I had been signed out due to my signing in on another computer. I was like.."but it was disabled?" So I followed kleenr's advice and removed it from the Windows Components. For whatever reason, SP2 didn't completely disable it at the time of the upgrade. I have a feeling it still hasn't completely disappeared, but I'd rather not reboot to find out right now.

Right-click on my computer/manage/services & applications/services/messenger sevice/
It's either disabled or it isn't...?

If you mean windows messenger, check out the link...it says it all. http://www.pchell.com/support/removemessenger.shtml There should be no uncertainty.

Yes I realize that people can find out virtually anything by searching Google, however, I really appreciate how readily people on this site are to share the information that they have already acquired. Thanks guys

Thanks guysMost people here are glad to help, but when answers are a keystroke away, some ZP members will become less tolerent. It is okay once in a while...we all do it. But, without mentioning any names, some people just like to start threads and/or boost their post count. I just wanted to make sure you knew about it...Google, that is...and welcome to ZP!
Cheers!
