I'm making my site in photoshop and dreamweaver.

In Photoshop, what size should I make it? I know most are viewed in 800x600 or 1024x768 but does that mean I make it that size in PS?

Every tutorial I've gone to has had a different size, but I want one that uses most of the space.

Any ideas?

Well, assuming you're designing a background in photoshop, you're going to hit some problems. First, size - try to make it pretty basic so it'll compress nicely. Second, you don't know what the user's screen size is - for example, I visit ZP on two computers. One is 1024x786 - the other is 1600x1200. If you don't want a repeating background, shoot for a really large size (i.e., 1600x1200 is probably the largest anyone is going to view it at).

As for designing the web site, shoot for the smallest size. Probably the smallest screen resolution anyone will view your site at would be 800x600. However, you could also design the site so it expands and contracts with the screen size (once again, like ZP).

In the end, play around with it and test it on different browsers and computers to see what looks good and what doesn't - that's the best way to figure out what works and what doesn't.

Or do a watermarked backround thats at opacity 35% - that'd make a nice effect.
