I've used plenty of file-sharers before with a 56k and cable modem. But now that I use a LAN, I can't connect to anything. I've tried morpheus, winmx, limewire, bittorrent, and some others, but none will even connect (except for winmx and one other one, in which no search results came up no matter what i searched for). I do have a firewall, but even when I turn it off the programs will not connect. Does anyone know what the problem is? Is it the LAN or the firewall that's causing problems and what should i do? (by the way, someone else that is connected to my LAN uses morpheus and says it works fine, so I don't know why it should be the LAN - she is computer illiterate and somehow it works).
Two things I just remembered:
1. with winmx, i tried adding a port (i think?), i followed the directions on the winmx faq i think, but it didn't work (it DID work on my old computer when I used a cable modem)
2.i use windows xp, and after reading a few posts, it appears that this operating system has a built in firewall. I did not know this, i use a blackice firewall and thought it was the only one on my computer. maybe that will help you with advice.
