Hi,

I've been browsing these forums for a while and there been some really good advice from a lot of people.

This week I've had a bee in my bonnet about finally getting bittorrent working. I've suffered from poor download speeds for about three months with bittorrent and gave up and decided to stick with IRC.

This week I want to get it sorted since so many people I know are using BitTorrent and are managing to get very good download speeds.

"Malicious intent" great faq for sorting out download speeds but it seems I have tried most things in your faq and I am still having problems

I am using windows XP with SP2 and the firewall is port forwarding on port 60996, TCP and UDP. I am only using the windows XP firewall and until yesterday I had the zonealarm freebie but decided to get rid of it since I've heard it can have an impact on your p2P applications. I am using Azureus as my torrent client. I have a 1M connection with the ISP supanet. I am connected directly to my ADSL modem.

I have tried a range of ports but there is some messaging which I can see in the console window which is highlighted in red which indicated I can not establish outgoing connections. I'm not too sure whether this is a problem with my setup or normal torrent behaviour.

I've tried various torrents and it seems that my download will only get to about 10kb/s and my upload will max out at 30kb/s. I have tried limiting the upload to 12kb/s but this did not acheive anything. My downloads just dropped. Most of the time they sit at 0.

I have left it for various amounts of time but it still does not build up.

Yesterday I was downloading some software and there were 1600 peers and 300seeds.
My downloads fluctuated between 0 to 10k whilst my upload fluctuated between 0 and 30k.

I have tried various ports but I still can not seem to get this working.

The configuaration test in Azureus seems to indicate everything is okay and I am getting a mixture of green smileys and yellow smileys.

Can anyone also tell me what the scan at the sygate website should reveal.
There are a number of different scans available and I'm not sure what information this site is meant to show me.

I'm in the process of contacting my ISP but if I'm not using the standard ports anyway then would there still be a problem?

Someone please help as this is driving me crazy.

Any chance someone can walk through my setting if I post them screenshots of my settings?

Dee.

You wouldnt happen to live in Canada would you? There has much talk on other forums about the Shaw ISP limiting BT access. I think there may be a few other providers also doing this and as of yet there is no work around.

I'm in the UK.

If ISP's are limiting the bandwid then can you not move to another port as outlined in "the" faq?

This may be obvious but you need to tell Azureus to use the same port you open in your firewall.

No they cant seem to do that. From what I've read people have tried everything. After reading more about this on DSL reports it seems somehow the ISPs are blocking uploads so BT gives you shitty downloads. They are some tricky bastards. So this is not your problem.

Thanks for the replies I have contacted my ISP and they are not blocking or limiting any ports.

Really confused now.

I have also queried the problems I have in the main sticky thread about low download speeds.

Sorry for double posting but I am still new to this game.

Dee I am in the same position. No router, AntiVir firewall (off) un-installed Zonealarm as I had read the same. Yet 30 is my max and usually most is 20. I am getting frustrated. I live in Georgia (state) and have Bellsouth DSL. What is going on?

Ive been using azureus for about 4 months. As far as I can tell its pretty rare to get download speeds on most torrents greater than 30-50 kb/s. I think part of the reason could be due to the suggestion you are always reading in faqs that you set your upload speed quite low compared to your download speed. Almost nobody uploads faster than 20kb/s, Id say from what I can tell most the uploads you get from most people are around 1-5kb/s per. When I download torrents or seed torrents I set the individual upload rate as high as possible. I have about 128 kb/s upload max with my isp and I set my upload rates to 3/4ths that. I cant see that setting my upload rate lower increases my download speeds at all.. ever. Not once have I set my uploads to 11kb/s from 66 kb/s and had my download speed increase. It drops immediately. I think the only way youll ever get a download speed like 100 kb/s, which I have only on the most popular torrents and only rarely, whoever is seeding the torrent is going to have to have set their uploads to wide open, like when theyre not downloading I suppose. That and the leachers have to be minimal. Also, I notice, and this works to some extent every time I do it, that if I periodically go back to the configuration wizard, and go throught it again, It kicks my transfer rates up. Its almost like it defaults back to the lowest settings during the time youre downloading..

Over all though, even when your getting downloads that are like 10-30 kb/s, is it really so much endure that you have to wait a day for your fav. download to finish?? I mean, it would take some of you guys YEARS to buy all the stuff you download heh. So relax. You can find almost every last file you can dream of as a torrent. Is a day or two really so long to wait to realize a dream? I dont think so.
Peace Og

Im with Ntl! using Azureus with XP pro service pack 2, standard windows firewall, both UDP and TCP port open (the same port azureus uses)..... Azurues reports no Nat problems, Shields up site reports ports are open but shows stealth! however, i only ever get a yellow with the occasional blue face, never green!! download speeds vary between 25-45 kb/s which i accept, but it still leaves me puzzled??

Wow I am shocked to hear that NO ONE gets over 30 Kbps with Azureus, I have gotten 200+ on one file, and I generally get about 100 kbps when I am downloading more than four files. You guys must be getting bad torrents, as you know the speed of the download depends on how many seeders and leechers their are, and how fast their (and your) connections are. I reccomend a program called BT Engine, you can use it for free but it is much better if you pay for it, here is the link http://www.soft4kids.com/ Also I suggest going to http://www.mininova.org/ to download torrents.

im comcast...azureus BT and im at speeds of 15-70 on a general average....most run about 25 unless its early in the morining then im at 5-15...but when i added a few ports for decent. tracking and a few for d/l's and up's i made those jump a few k. So try to play around with certin ports..i have also noticed that thru my cicso router, the lower the port the faster it can be...not always that case though.
