Download speeds not getting above 15 kB/s

Hello all,

Would just like to say that i've searched through the forums and couldn't find any advice particular to my query.

I'm currently connecting through a ntl cable modem (1.5 mB) and don't have a router. So far i've tried 4 torrent clients including, Btorrent, BTornado, BCommet, and am currently using Azureus (All have given me the same ball park download speeds).

The problem is that my download speeds never reach above 15-20 kB/s, and generally stays under 10. Is this the normal speed acheivable? I'm sure its not. Its quite annoying seeing as i tend to upload at 50+ kB/s (I am not swamping my bandwidth with exessive upload speeds) plus the torrent that i am trying to download has connected me to 33 peers and 7 seeds with a network speeds of 300 kB/s.

Any help wiil be appreciated. Thanks in advance

do you have a firewall? how many peers + seeds are you connected to?

try other bitorrent clients, maybe http://www.torrentopia.com/ (torrentopia bitorrent client with integrated search engine)

I get really good speeds with this client and I am behind Comcast high speed cable internet and A wireless 2.8 Ghz wireless linksys router.

I'm not saying this to be rude, I'm saying it to be helpful:

If you have read the thread, then you would have read the "asking for more help" section. If you have read that section, then you would know just how useless your post is for us to help you.

Go back and read it properly. It is mostly explaination and not all parts are relevent, so it isn't as bad as it looks.

-> Say clearly what the problem is <--- Download speeds not reaching above 15 kB/s

-> Say what client you are using <---- Azureus

-> Say whether you are on SP1 or 2 <--- Not sure what this means

-> The exact setup of your network/ how your computer is connected to the net <---- Standalone PC, running windows 98, connected directly to the internet via a standard ntl cable modem with a speed of 1.5 MBi

-> All the software you are running <--- Tried to run without any software running at all, still the download speed wasn't effected

-> What you have done so far to try and resolve the problem <--- Downloaded and tried lots of different clients, change the port settings, and messed around with my max uploads/upload speed to try and get my download speed up without any success

Hope this help, what downlaod speed should i be acheiving by the way?

Are you aware that NTL imposes download limits on heavy users? Last time I heard it was 1Gb a day.

Are you sure NTL has a download limit? I don't think it does, besides thats deffinatly not the problem, i get download speeds of 120 kB/s when downloading of a website (like when i just downloaded media player again :;) )


My health bar is blue now on azureus now. When i first started using this client it was definatly green (slow downloads still) very confusing. My share rate it 3-4 i mean thats very generous :p !

My download usually starts off really slow but after a bit gets much faster. One things that helps is to download one file at a time, two at the max unless you don't care how long it takes.

I wish it was as simple as that, i've been downloading a film over night, it was the only one open, and open for a good 8 hours. No improvement in the bit rate

I think it still applies, not that it's neccessarily the cause of your problem.

The limit is never enforced.

I usually download 2-4gb a day and they dont slow down my connection.

Jameo have you recently upgraded to Windows XP Service Pack 2?

When i did my download speeds for ed2k and BT went very slow 15-20kb/S, while downloading from ftp or websites i had maxed out.

Once i tried the hack for connections on SP2 my ed2k & BT speeds went up and maxed out.
