Try going to your shared folder on WinMX, and hit Refresh, see if it goes away.

are you on secondary connection? "ghost files" are very common on secondary connections. I once browsed myself in a chat room and It said I had kiddie porn. I was horrified, since I think that stuff is sick and shouldn't exist, and here it was saying I had that crud on my HD... but you'll get a new selection of files every time you log on, last monday I "had" some anime movies.

Its been like that throught the whole 3.xx series. :fire

Maybe I'm one of the fortunate ones, but it works fine for me. Then on the other hand, I'm not that winmx literate either.

Though on opennap, you'll always get the correct files, though due to some servers will limit the number of files shown. OpenNap is not affected by your connection on WinMX. This is useful if someone accuses you of not sharing you can then go to a server (that doesn't limit browses!) and prove yourself.

ok so if these ghost files exist on your shared folder or whatever, if another user tries to download this type of file won't they get an error or something?
they can't download something that is not there right?

I'm unable to browse my own shared files via entering a chat since I can't seem to get in one after I right click and select "Join", nothing happens. That's another bug I guess...

You'll get an error message saying "the file has cannot be found" or something like that.

Oh, try not to get into a busy chat, It'll say 40/40 for example. Which means thiers a capacity for 40 and its full. Try one of the emptier chats. And it takes a while for it to load up, depending on connection.

I tried on the ones that are not full and it takes forever so I don't even bother...I currently have DSL 768/128 so I don't know why it would take to long to load.

Yea, this problem has existed in every version of WinMX since I first started using it, but, come on, it's not that big of a deal. Most people are aware of this problem, and if they browse you and see 500 mp3's and 2 or 3 porn, they will realize that these are ghost files, and if not, who cares. It' somewhat annoying and needs to be fixed, but it's no reason to quit using WinMX. It' the best there is.

Listen if it bugs you all so much (as it does me) then take a .txt file and put some gibberish in it so its more than 0 bytes, and then name the file "if you see porn, anime, pop music, etc, etc, etc, it is a ghost file NOT REAL.txt"

and put as much as you can in the file name and make another file and name that as "ghost files are other peoples files that show up on secondary users browses.txt"

Add them to your shared folder, and add .txt to your shared file types list.

Can someone please confirm that my problem is related to this "ghost files" problem.

Often, when I download using WinMX3.1, I'll hapily queue up and eventually download (sometimes) the full .mpg, .avi etc.. but when I run/look at it, it is a totally different movie, tune!

If I then browse the person that I downloaded from's list of shared files, the actual file that I got is showing as exactly the same size and they haven't even got the original file that I was waiting for!!

Very strange.

WinMX seems to get confused and give you a totally different file that is the same size.

Comments?

How to remove ghost files from winmx.

When you connect to winmx your file list has to be uploaded to the winmx servers.

Depending on how many files you are sharing this can take a few minutes.

If you go into one of the winmx chatrooms and do a whois on yourself.

If when you do the whois on yourself it says you have less files shared than you actually do it means that your list is still uploading.

Everytime you add a new file to your list to prevent ghost files you should refresh your shared files and then refresh your connection once.

When you have refreshed wait a minute or two for your list to be uploaded and then do a whois on yourself. If it says that your sharing exactlty what you are sharing if you browse yourself you should have no ghost files.

If this does not work repeat the proccess and browse your self again.

WinMX can be a bit temperamental at times so be patient and you should not have any ghost files.

I hope this helps you all. :fire

sometimes the tag name and the actual file name are completely different, for example you try to download harry potter and get snow dogs instead

i doubt that has anything to do with ghost files

not everybody can afford cable/dsl, and even for some who can, its not allways possible to get it, i had to wait for a long time before the built a hub near enough to us, and we live in a good sized neighborhood, for those in the country they might never be able to have it
