I've just received an email from my university resnet admin saying that the volume of outgoing data sent from my computer is excessive, my upload speed was automatically capped after a sustained period of use and they've told me to uninstall all filesharing software or they'll disconnect me. Is there anything I can do if I want to continue using BT?

Not much you can do.
You could limit the total you upload, but I have a feeling they will be monitoring your upload for a while to see if you took their advise.
If you share a file at least 100 percent of the file all the time, your speed wont matter because you are still sharing the same amount of data.
If your intent is to share like a good little filesharer then there really isnt much you can do aside from having your own ISP instead of using the schools.
Try seeing if you can order DSL/Cable for your dorm or whereever you are staying.

Thanks for the reply, I can't get my own connection here so I guess I'll have to start using irc..

Send them a complete log of what is on your computer--AFTER you temporarily uninstall all file-sharing apps, of course. Also send them a log/screenshot of a clean virus scan.
Reinstall filesharing apps. Continue to share, but at a drastically lower rate. Sharing is still sharing.
