If you want a refreshing, contemporary artist to listen to that still has classical ties, I recommend Andrea Bocelli for your listening pleasure. I've been fan of his for awhile, but was converted officially when I took one of his albums to Italy with me. His voice is just so moving. I know from surfing the web that he's coming out with a new album on November 9th, which a friend at Universal says has an international vibe since he put together a new creative team. Here's a site featuring the CD if you're curious...http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00063M11C/ref=pd_luc_17_lc_a84x0//002-2590286-6147258?v=glance&s=music

His voice is OK-but your average High School has singers just as good.

Bocelli has one of the best, most versatile voices around...Many listeners and musicians agree to that. So I don't know how you can compare him to high school singers. You are either not knowledgable or just trying to start a flame war....but thats just my opinion.
I havent listened to his new album that much, but if you want a good sample, check out Romanza, or particularly these songs/classical pieces.
Per Amore (For Love)
Caruso
Time to Say Goodbye(Con Te Partiṛ)
L'abitudine
La Donna E Mobile
Ave Maria

I didn't compare him to high school singers. What I said was your average high school will have comparably talented people.
To make it simple I'll use 1000 as the average high school enrollment.(Mine was twice that)
Out of 1000 people you don't think there would be a couple who had comparable talent?Unless the school is located in a coal mine next to a mustard gas plant and offers courses in cheap cigar smoking technique(teaching the inhale and hold method)it would be a statistical anomaly.
I agree he has a versatile voice albeit in a Micheal Bolton,Kenny G(if your mind can wrap around the sax to vocal comparison) saccarhine way.He has excellent timbre and a good control of his vibrato and this gives his voice a primal, emotional quality that appeals to chics.(Being blind and having nice hair doesn't hurt either.)
Bocelli is a lawyer BTW and I am sure he has learned to fake emotion with the best.
Anyway I'm not trying to start a flame war .If I was it would be readily apparant. And as far as not being knowledgeable I am a tenor with a 3 octave range.(just a hair over if I've been practicing and running.)
I have a couple songs from Romanza on this hard drive BTW.Like I said in my first post-his voice is OK.(But his marketing is better)

Bocelli may be the modern day Caruso, a man described by some musicologists as a kind of buffoon. Bocelli has a great instrument, but unlike Caruso he uses it mostly for low-brow tear-jerking sentimental trash. If he is a great musician (which indeed he may be) I wish he would display that musical soul a bit instead of pandering to commercialism. I fail to hear real sensitivity behind the corn!
I am NOT a vocalist, so this should not come off as sour grapes. I just can't understand what all the big hoo-hah over Bocelli is all about!! What am I missing? Can someone more knowledgeable about vocalists please clue me in?

Bocelli is good and in 2007 he has really come alive like this dead thread. But there are perhaps other even greater singers.
At a pinch Fischer-Dieskau, Schreier, Domingo, Pavarotti and Carreras come to mind for still living male singers.
