I use Azureus, and for the longest time it's been working very well. I was geting the "green simleys" and my downloads where going fast.
Well that all ended. This is what happened.
I reinstalled windows and reformated my hardrives. I reinstalled Azureus, but now i'm geting only yellow simlys, indicating a "NAT error". I had corrected this problem befour by haveing to change some setting on my router. I whent it thinking that mabey they had been changed, but they where all set properly.
Now i've tryed eveything i could find to fix this NAT error, disableing certin pulgins, port forwarding, changeing the lissoning port, disableing windows firewall, disableing all my firewalls and AV softwear i installed SP2 and also the connection limit fix. just about eveything, but nothing works.
THe thing that is really geting me is that the computer downstairs, on the same router is working perfectly, my brother get the green smilys.
I don't like to ask for help like this when there are tons of FAQ's and other files, but i've honestly tryed eveything i can find, and nothing seems to work. I just keep geting the NAT error and I thought mabye some one here would be able to help my given the situation ni a way a help file could not.
Thanks to any one who can help.
oh, if it matters the programs i have running are Zone Alarm, KAspersky AV personal. But i've tryed disableing them both and trying it again but still NAT errors. As it stands i've disabled ZA firewall and made sure Windows firewall is off as well.

Start up your desktop computer, fill the bathtub with water then step into the tub while holding your still plugged in desktop and submerge yourself. This may not take care of your Azureus problem but it will cure that nasty cross posting problem you have.

Hi
(to be applied to Windows XP SP2)
Anyone who still has that 'Yellow Smiley' and NAT problem in Azureus... i think i might have the solution.
I tried on my computer, and now, aparently everything works fine. I have Green Smileys, as i was supposed to.
Anyway, i'll show you how i did.
1. First of all, if you have some kind of firewall protection, you dont need to de-activate it, just need to tell the fw program which file
you want to permit the in/outbound traffic, nothing else. (i.e.: i use Norton Internet Security 2003, and i simply configured: azureus.exe "permit all").
2. Check if you have the "Exception" entered on your windows XP fw configuration for Azureus's Ports: 6881 and 6889 TCP/UDP in case you use windows XP fw.
3. and, after these 2 steps are checked, i did one more thing: Go to your network connections and Right-Click on your Internet Connection and choose properties.
After that, go to the "Advanced" Tab and under "Internet Connection Sharing" click the settings button. Now, you will probably see some services and port configured for Azureus as well. Do not delete them. Simple add these services configs:
(Oh... one more thing. The machine i have directly connected to the internet, with Azureus running, has the following ip: 192.168.0.1 obviously.
So, your should CHANGE the ip option and redirect it to YOUR OWN machine's IP.)
Click "Add..." button and fill with this:
"Description of the service:"
Call it whatever you want... (i called this first "Azureus TCP 6881")
"Name or IP address ..."
192.168.0.1 (my computerīs IP wich Azureus is running on)
"External Port Number for this service:"
6881 oTCP
"Internal Port number for this service:"
6881
Just repeat this step using these configurations:
6881 - UDP, 6889 - TCP and 6889 - UDP.
4. Stop your downloads, restart Azureus and run the wizard port test. You will probably get "Ok" at the test, and have the green smileys.
Im not sure if this will work in any of your own configurations and operating systems whatsoever.
Since it worked for me, i thought it might be usefull to share it with some of you.
Cheers!

I've followed everything and its still not workin. I'm running Zone Alarm and XP SP1, and I have it able to access internet and be a server and everything, but I don't know if I need to allow it to access the ports. Here is a page of the router stuff, just to make sure that I did it right:

Some AV programs are notorious for working with BT. NOD and Kaspersky in particular. If the following steps should fail, try disabling them as well.
Configure an exception for Azureus in whatever firewall software you use. Note port numbers, should you need them.
Next, turn on UPnP in your router settings. By now, your problem should be resolved.
If not, also forward the correct ports through your router. Check the settings in the router and your client. Check again.

Hey I get a NAT error message when I check the port but I still get happy green smileys. I have a direct connection (ie. no router, no need for port forwarding), also not a firewall issue. My ISP swears it is not their fault (ie. blocking port ranges). Other apps also tell me the ports are inaccessable, but seem to work OK as far as I can tell. Im just wondering if azerus is actually listening on the port I have told it to????? Any ideas? My DL sits around 25-70KB (51 as I write) on a 1.5Mb (~180KB) line, my UL sits at line capacity.

DigitalJunkie, you're an inspiration to us inside-the-boxers. That sounds terrible, but it's a mistake, I swear. I was having a similar problem: just reinstalled XP Pro SP1, installed SP2 ... nothing. I just updated the Java runtime and it's like old times.
I was starting to feel like a leper with all my BT peers reaching out occasionally only to recoil in disgust.

If all else fails, you can just go into your router configuration and enable the DMZ setting. Make sure you have a good software firewall running and that it is configured to allow access to and from the port azureus is configured to use. That should get it assuming your on a normal internet connection and not at work, or at a school.. Good luck

hey just a little thought i had . Nobody said a single thing about port forwarding. Your NAT Error is derived from the fact that the router is configured to use dynamic ports. You need to set up both computers as static IPs to the router. I just fixed the same problem on two computers at a friends house running win xp pro sp2, azureus and both routed through a 2Wire router/DSL modem. If you would like to know specifics check out azureus' extensive How-to files on fixing the NAT errror . At first I didnt understand it but once i got my feet wet i couldnt help but to see green smileys. check out http://azureus.aelitis.com/wiki/index.php/NAT_problem#Make_sure_you_really_have_a_NAT_proble m
this site helped me alot. let me know how it goes.
P.S. the first rule of port forwarding DON'T USE a 6xxx PORT !!!!!!! trackers block transmissions from those ports.

My azureus was humming along sorta fine with yellow smileys, but I decided to go for the green and screwed it all up. Now - nothing: NAT error every time.
So I set the network properties under connections to static IP, reset my router according to postforward.com, and I'm stil turning up red smileys.
I'm not sure what to try next. I've got no firewalls. Can't figure out how to reset my modem - as someone posted earlier. And I'm not sure if I have to reset my router to static as well.
Can anyone help?
Here's my router status info and my connection settings:

well ive found a downside to winmx going down
10.001 instances of the same questions lol
they are clogging the site up and slowing it down
and worst of all... they dont use the search function
i think we need to make a news post for the front page directing new users to a huge search box and the winmx pages

Heya guys.. ive got a similar problem..
My roomie is using optimum online, with voip.. they apparently have 2 routers..
it comes into the house, plugs into the cable modem, then plugs into small black box (im assuming voip router), then that router is plugged into my netgear router..
Now.. I've enabled port forwarding (7838-udp) from my voip router to my netgear router, and the netgear router is routing port 7838 to my pc...
However, im still gettin that retarded yellow smiley, saying something about nat problems.. I gotta LITTLE bit of network exp, and im reasonably sure i have the port forwarding set up right:
(192.168.102.xxx) (192.168.0.xxx) ( 192.168.0.2)
isp~~~~modem~~~~~~~voip router~~~~~~~~~~~net gear router~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~my pc
i can access the modems setup page, and have it forward to the ip address 192.168.102.xxx
the wierd part is.. the public ip address that shows under my netgears web interface, is a private ip addy
you know how it has a wan ip addy? well that wan ip address is 192.168.102.xxx (inside the netgear router)
from the router itself:
Internet Port
MAC Address 00:09:5b:xx:xx:xx
IP Address 192.168.102.xxx
DHCP DHCP Client
IP Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Domain Name Server
167.206.x.xxx
167.206.x.xxx
LAN Port
MAC Address 00:09:5b:52:9f:0e
IP Address 192.168.0.1
DHCP On
IP Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
now.. correct me if im wrong..
but i would have the cable modem (192.168.102.xxx) forward 7838 to 192.168.0.1 (the netgear router) then.. from the netgear router... to my comps ip addy, in the port fowarding section... right?
now.. also.. if i punch in http://192.168.102.1 in my browser.. it brings me to the motorola interface page for the modem itself.. however... in the port fowarding section, it only allows me to port fwd to 192.168.102.xxx (select my own ip addy)
if the router is using 192.168.102.100 as its wan ip addy...
wouldnt i tell the motorola to forward 7838 to 192.168.102.100 ?
then the netgear would foward FROM 192.168.102.100 to 192.168.0.1 then from there to my pc??
if so.. thats what i have done.. but im still gettin the yellow icon for my client (azeurus)
any pointers in the right direction would be great thanks

well im having this nat error problem... but ontop of that it seems my msn messneger (7....) and mozilla have stopped working (first msn and azureus... then over the past week mozilla wont connect to anything.. but internet explorer works) anyways, so i went to reinstall java and i cant. it gives me an error that says Error - Java (TM) The installer cannot proceed with the current Internet connections proxy settings. Please check the Installation Notes for more information.
I cant find anything wrong with my proxy settings in the first place...
does anyone have a clue what i may need to do to fix this?

Hi all,
for all of the people that have the YELLOW SMILEY problem, and you want it to go to GREEN SMILEY follow these steps:
1. First of all, the port in Azureus should be: 6881
2. In your router settings port 6881 should be open on your ip and as port 6881 TCP+UDP.
3. Go to Network Connections and right click on your internet conection and click Propeties.
4. Then click on the tab Advanced.
5. Then click on the button Settings.
6. In that place there should be a list of alot of Services. If you already have the Service Azureus, you need to check the box nex to it.
7. If the Azureus Sevice does not appear there, click on the add button.
8. The first box write any name. The second box write your computers ip address (e.g 192.168.0.1). The third box write 6881. The fourth box right 6881. The choice between TCP and UDP, choose for now TCP.
9. Do step 7-8 again but change the name and change the Choice between TCP and UDP, this time do UDP.
10. Do step 7-8-9 again but this time change the name and change the 3-4 boxes to port 6889. And do the same thing like port 6881 do a TCP and UDP.
11. You finished all of these steps Restart Azureus, and hopefully you are going to have GREEN SMILEY's and your Download Speed should pass the 100 kb/s.
Hope It Works For You!

Azureus Yellow Smileys and NAT problems...possible solution

Everyone just keeps giving the same shitty answers to these questions. Tell me something new, that i haven't heard already. I've had this problem forever & to my knowledge there is no fix. I've spent months reading this same garbage over & over again. Im convinced at the moment that my ip is just messing with me. i get speeds at 300kb/s sometimes then after i walk away and come back in a few minutes it's down to like 10kb/s. I restart azureus it goes way high again then "boom" back to around 10. It is seriously beginning to piss me off. Im running on a 4.0/768k connection. :( In case anyone has anything new to say here, im running windows xp home edition sp1, through a linksys wrt54g v4 firmware router. I have forwarded all ports correctly , when azureus starts up it says i have successfully connected to the port using UPnP. i've tried turning it on & off . I've have enabled and disabled all firewalls in the router & in windows, and im still stuck looking at firewalled & nat firewalled in azureus :icon_scra . Bittorrent is my computers soul without it, it's useless to me. I appreciate all it has given me, i just can't stand these slow speeds anymore. I swear if i don't find a fix soon this computer is going to feel the wrath of a sledge hammer. Any help would be appreciated.

Look it, we are a 24\7 operation here, it is free, no admission fee and no surcharges.
With that, we try to answer complex questions that involve the interoperability of operating systems, applications, network connectivity, ISPs, LANs, etc etc etc and often we have to do forensic research because the requestors cant \ wont adequately describe what their problems are. This goes on for page after page, then after some exhausting length of dialogue, the forum often either gets a big fuck you very much, or gets crap because we're not psychic or omnipotent.
I for one have no more tolerance for people that show up here and demand we cater to their request within 5 minutes, then throw crap at us.
Admittedly, not everyone here has the same level of expertise, or same experiences, and often there is more than one right answer to a question. I AM a lot more tolerent of what people provide as answers, because at least they TRY and havent gotten utterly burned out on iliterates and foreignors that cant piece together an intilligible sentence.
So if I see people scrapping to provide an answer, even if I dont think it's the right one, I dont say anything, because if the QUESTIONER new any better anyway, they would find be able to solve their own problem.
To sum it up, I really dont care about the quality of the posts here, because if we had to meet some bar of expertise and provide definitive defendable links from the MSKB or Technet, then no one would do anything ever.

all you complaining n00bs need to calm down, if you're still getting a download with a yellow connection, your still getting something... truth is, most of the time, if its still downloading something, thats all the speed you're gonna get! Sometimes mine run green, sometimes they run yellow, fact of the matter is, they all run the same speed. so dont fret if your tracker never connects, you're still getting a download, and chance are, what your downloading is illegal anyway, so dont complain! :P

I've been reading this thread with interest because I have, or rather had, the same problem after a fresh install despite port forwarding, etc, not using port 6881, enabling encryption so ISP's with Packeteer or similar couldn't see torrent packets and throttle back my connection....
Then I read the replies from rivion_damera and Deedeeh and I idly checked the XP firewall, bearing in mind I know I turned the damned thing off, and guess what?
The little sod was back on again!!!
Perhaps it gets reset to on during Windoze updates?
I turned it off, and green smileys!
I've been double checking everything I've done for the last two days with no avail, and it turns out it was SP2's most unloved component resurrecting itself!
Moral; double check the XP firewall, it rises from the dead when you aren't looking!

Thank you Auggie, but my point was always check the XP firewall because it can sneakily turn back on on you, thus leading you to think you've screwed up when you haven't...
I have allowed Az now in the XP fw in case it turns back on again.

I've been getting great download speeds (up to 600 kbps/sec) but couldn't get rid of the nasty NAT error message. Tried everything I read online but nothing worked. It finally turned to green when I disabled port triggering in my router settings. Don't need it on as I don't do online gaming. It even mentions port triggering as a problem in the Azureus FAQ. It also fixed the problem I'd been having with the router losing the connection to the internet a few times a day.

It means you don't have any seeders, you need someone with the entire thing to start being friendly.
Also, finding it again and using different trackers could help. Don't re-download it.

how do you change tracker during a download without having to start the download again?

Azureus is the best client because of what you can do to it. For better connection even with NAT errors (which is what I do) you can get Azureus Ultra Accelerator which is free and effective, you can also get BT Engine which is not free and it only works on certain ports but it makes it extremely effective. :icon_sunn

I get yellow smilies too but I still have great speeds, now around 30 kilobytes per second to 210k kilobytes per second. I've never eve seen a green smiley, I just worry about the speeds. When choosing a torrent, it's very important to check its health, otherwise, it's not you, it's your torrent. NAT errors are annoying for me because I don't know if I could be getting better speeds, but I've tried every way to fix them and there is no way to fix my router so it can, at least that I know. :icon_thum
By the way, you can alternate which computer you have downloads the torrent and then use two e-mails with msn messenger 8.0 to make a sharing folder to distribute the files to the computer you want. That's what I do.

Ok... I already read all these 4 pages posts.
I already solved the yellow smiley problem and all these NAT Error, Firewalled problem on my Laptop.
If u experienced this problem with this specification settings:
1 Router Modem direct to my Laptop (no hub or switch in the middle).
2 Your Port ranged between: 49152–65534 (mine is 58723).
3. My Windows XP Firewall is OFF.
4. I dont have any firewall software or anti-virus with firewall (I use only AVG Free Edition and Trend Micro Office Scan and its on my system tray)
If u experience the same thing that I faced before:
1. When my first Azureus install, my download able to hit 200 kB/s.
2. You go to work, u went home early to continue downloading Initial D Anime. it still ok, but not as fast as before. (around 80kB/s) < - actually u were lucky. your dynamic IP capture the same IP of your first Azureus installation settings).
3. The 3rd day u go to work, u went home early, and your Azureus is super slow with yellow smiley, NAT Error, Firewalled, and whatever u call it!
So the problem is, u are using dynamic IP. Azureus must work on static IP! I search and test many steps I found in this 4 pages post, and this one is working. It is all about Port Forwarding and Static IP.
How to set Static IP? (my static IP is 192.168.1.3, subnet 255.255.255.0, Def Gateway 192.168.1.1, DNS 192.168.1.1-If your DNS only 1, then just put on the prefered DNS server, leave the Alternate DNS server empty)
http://www.portforward.com/networking/static-xp.htm
How to set Port Forwarding? U know what is your router models and its series? Everything step by step.
http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm
If u think it sites above didnt even mention about Azureus, dont worry about it. The step-by-step follows what needed for Azureus to work. Just follow exactly as it tells!
Avoid doing this:
1. uninstall and re-install Java Runtime Environment (JRE). In my case, I didnt do that.
2. exit Azureus and restart again. In my case, I didnt do that.
3. Restart PC- I didnt do that.
4. Waiting. Just forget about it if u think by waiting several hours the download rate will increase if u have this yellow smiley, NAT Problem, and Red Sign (Firewalled).
Yahoooo!!!! My problem solved!!! thanks to those people who provided here with the link above in the previous posts. Yahoooo!!! oooopsss. Now I'm fully using google... Gooooooogle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (not bad!) Goooooooooogle!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, I'm new to all this.. I just recently installed Azureus and I read on here that you need to see green smilies for best downloads, well mine are red, yellow and blue and getting about 7kb/s max. I don't know how to port foward, I tried and still I keep getting this message "Testing port 64043 ...
NAT Error - Connection to 89.243.88.230:64043 (your computer) refused."
can anyone help? thanks.

1. go here and forward your ports- it has guides specific to your router
http://portforward.com/guides.htm
2. install a decent firewall..
3. SWITCH OFF windows firewall
4. Start Azereus
Your firewall should ask you if you want to allow connections to and from your azereus niominated port- tell it okay
should sort it out
BTW utorrent is a really good alternative to azereus and forwards ports automatically with more success than azereus in my experience.

Hi, I seem to be doing everything you guys did but I'm not getting those nice green smileys. Every so often my similies tend to turn green for a few minutes and they go yellow again :-(
So here's the situation:
I changed my router a few days ago (before that everything was working fine). I configured the NAT and disabled the firewall on my new router.
When I did the NAT/Firewall test I got the following error: Testing port 65525 ...
NAT Error - Connection to 212.74.171.28:65525 (your computer) refused.
I tired with different port addresses including the default one, but it didn't change anything.
So I figured that I may need a static address (even though this wasn't the case with my old router). So I changed my address to a static one and I still get the same error.
I'm running on mac os X 10.5 and have no firewall installed on my computer.
Any ideas of what may be going on? I'm figuring it's more related to the router.
Cheers
