Hi All

New to the forum, can anyone help with these 3 questions. I use winmx 3.53 and my isp is ntl cabel.

1) When connecting i can choose either secondary or primary, however when i connect as a primary user the available files are always less when comparred to a secondary connection. (i.e. search = "the kinks", on secondary 100's of files appear, on primary less than 10 ???).

2) A mate of mine uses winmx. When i type a file name on my pc that he wants to share with me i can never find him as a user ?. I have checked the obvious ones (i.e. is he on line, are his files sharable etc).

3) When downloading the k/s rates are the same irrespective if i have connected as primary or secondary. I had used winmx on my last pc and there was always quite a difference then....why not now ?.

many many thanks in anticipation.

It's been a while since I used winmx.

1) Maybe because when you are a primary, secondary users connect to yours computer and you process searchs for them. You might get more results as a primary if you leave it running for a long time so that more secondarys tell your client about the files they are sharing. Maybe you don't have your connection sharing system or firewall configured so winmx can receive incoming connections.
Look at the output of netstat after running primary for a few hours, you should see lots of connections to the local TCP port that winmx is set to use.

2) Firstly the search in winmx only searches a small part of the network. Second if neither of you can receive incoming connections you can't exchange files.

3) Unless you are hitting the bandwidth limits set in winmx settings or the capacity of your connection it should not make a difference to the speed once a download starts transfering.
Remember that being a primary uses some of the bandwidth to process searches and that comes out of the total bandwidth limits in the settings.
