I am sure this has been asked somewhere before, i did search, but i did not find and a bit lazy so please help, that's what forums are there for right?!
Got a .avi movie file with the subtitles in a seperate folder (.sub file). How do I play the two together and how to I burn them together with Nero.
Thanks all

First you will need a program called vobsub http://www.divx-digest.com/software/vobsub.html
Keep the subtitle file'/folder in the same folder as the movie. In window media player click on the view option and click on captions. The subs should show up in the movie now.
When you burn it to CD just put it all in one folder and burn it.

Thanks so much.
I have downloaded VobSub. Now what. I cannot find "Captions" in Windows Media Player either.

Oh sorry, found it in the "Play" options. The captions and subs are enabled. What do i do with VobSub now?

Now that you have installed vobsub, make sure you keep the subtittle file in the same folder with video file. The sub file also has to be named the same as the movie file. Once you have done all that and have captions enabled, the subtitles should play along with the movie. Good luck

Ok, burning is not a success so far. I use Nero and can only add the AVI file. The AVI is in the same folder as the the sub file but t does not pick up the subs as it burns. Any ideas on what I am doing wrong?

Thanks Wolfie,Team America did make me laugh out loud and not many mvies do that.
Freefalling, I'm not sure what may be going wrong. The sub file should be in the folder on your burned CD. Anyone else have any idea?

Are you trying to burn it as a vcd or data disc?
If you're trying to make an mpg out of it letting nero convert the avi to mpg for you then of course it won't work..nero is a very good burning program but it isn't the best file conversion utility.
If you make a data cd (not vcd) and put the avi in a folder which contains the sub folder you should have no problem playing it from the cd...but if you're trying to create a vcd out of it....that won't work using nero with an avi that has selectible (optional subtitles)
check out doom9.org for info on how to convert the avi with separte subs to a vcd..there should be some tutorial there.

If I burn it as a data file I won't be able to watch it on a VCD player right?

I tried the method given but to no avail. I downloaded vobsub from http://www.afterdawn.com/software/download_splash.cfm and placed the movie and .sub file in the same folder. But in windows media player under the captions i could only select subtitles if available. Any idea why?

I believe in VobSub, you can set it play subtitles automatically.

Actually i'm not too sure what vobsub is. Its not a player right? I only see SubMux and subResync, how do they work?

VobSub is a utility that display subtitles (xxx.sub or xxx.srt) at the bottom of the screen while you play the movie (xxx.avi or xxx.vob).

If I burn it as a data file I won't be able to watch it on a VCD player right?
that's correct.

hey, I'm having the same problem and this thread still didn't answer the question "how do you burn an VCD/SVCD with subtitles", I can play them just fine with VLC without doing any folder/file renaming stuff, but I know Nero Won't burn it, and Toast on my Mac won't do it...and I'm not a fan of downloading random burning prog's because every free app seems to be riddled with all sorts of shit lately, so if someone could help out it would be greatly appreichiated

Sorry, I don't think there are any DVD players that will allow you to burn a VCD/SVCD with seperate subs and watch them and ive never seen a program that would let you add subs to a VCD/SVCD burn.

ok, but can't you just merge the subs and video into one file (obviously a lengthy process) and then burn it...if i could buy a damn dvd with the subs i would, but upstate ny isn't the greatest place to get 50 year old french short films on dvd, and I'm presenting it to a class...if i need to I'll bring my whole damn computer, but there must be a program that will merge subs and video...and if there isn't, there should be...bah.

There are stand alone DVD Players that can play DivX/XviD movies & could display subtiltles, but not all DVD Players so you may want to do a research first on the internet!

Not many stand alond DVD players can play these sub files. You did everything right it sounds, but your player is at fault.

If your burning subs for an Avi file its much different than burning subs for mpeg files.
There may be away to re-encode the avi file with subs that will always be visible but I have not found one yet.
