I just downloaded DC so i guess i would be considered a newbie and have never been on a p2p with hubs. But i'm a hardcore veteran with p2p's all the way back to Napster and plenty more to numerous to mention.

I don't know about this Direct Connect though. Everything i've ever read about it, that you need too many gigs of files to connect etc put me off for a while. But people that were looking for music, especially some rare and mostly non mainstream music like me you couldn't get a better place than DC. They almost made it sound like it was a newsgroup like, better than any regular p2p. Well so far I could get more results if I knocked on my neighbours doors than I do when i search a band on DC. I put in some well known bands and some not after connecting to various hubs and I think i got 15 files once and every other time less. Is this the way it's supposed to be? Too lazy or jaded with the whole thing now anyway. I'm at the point where i got just about everything i ever wanted from Napster and Audiogalaxy and the p2ps now you never find anything near the uniqueness and diversity of the old p2ps in regards to music. Search for songs that are are a little non mainstream or live songs and you can be looking forever. You just get very basic files by most bands which to me sucks. But the DC thing sounded good but not if you get so few results everytime i connect to a hub. Am i doing something wrong?
Also a little confused with the search thing. You have a search on the top left, you click that and it brings you down to another search bar more in the top middle of the page and then you have the search options on the left. Seems like unless you change the hub (in the search options) it's searching the last hub you were on. And don't know if i should have the hub checked (check mark in box) or not. Same with the audio option. It unchecks every time you connect to a new hub. Wheeeeeew. I don't know. Just want to get something out of it have the right things checked or unchecked and get some results. Thanks

Yeah DC++ real good program. Installed it and couldn't connect to anything. Clicked public hubs and it said download failed over and over. Had it on Active and passive modes. Next.

You know, not EVERYTHING will be handed to you on a silver platter. If you would have bothered to look, you'd know that the site that was previously hosting the default hublist for DC++ has had to take it down. No problem though, as a quick google search will produce an endless montage of hublists, and all you have to do is copy down the URL and paste it into the right spot in DC++.

Despite the simplicity of DC++, I get the feeling it may be over your head. I suggest that you use soulseek instead, as it is much more reminiscent of the p2p apps you are used to. the majority of the files on slsk are music, and the majority of the music is rare and/or high quality. The only real problem is download speeds - even at a max DL of 37KB/s, I rarely max out with just one user.

I looked over my head wonderbra. No DC++. But i did download another version of DC++ on a recomendation... rmdc. No problem there except it's still was no comparison in the amount of files compared to regular p2ps. Maybe I don't know all the tricks yet but I connected to a few hubs searched some bands and that's it. Right? Also clicked on a few users and got their lists (browsed them) although that worked only a few times. And since all the hubs on this version were from Hungary I assume I can as you said paste other urls and get different hubs? Can you connect to a bunch at once to get more results? Bottom line I expected to get tons of results from these hubs and it seems like only a few users will have what you want and you will just get a few files whereas regular p2ps might have thousands of these files on the network. I'm sure technically there is a lot more to it than that but for what I want is that essentially it?

Have Soulseek for years thank you. Not rare enough files for me or diverse would be a better word. Also Ares, Limewire,WinMx, Kazaa lite resurrection. Only looking for music and still looking for SOMETHING that comes close to Audiogalaxy or Napster. Yeah I know good luck.

I'm curious. What bands?

In your case you need to find a hub that is dedicated for the thing you are looking for. Obviously if the content you are searching is very rare, finding it on a generic hub is less likely.

The only network these days that comes close to the selection of files that Napster and AG provided is the FastTrack network, and I'm sure that with your infinite filesharing knowledge, you already know that FT worthless.

You will have to search furiously for what you are looking for. Soulseek is, in my opinion, the best source for rare music. If that doesn't suit your needs, then you'll have to start looking elsewhere.

Every once in a while, a rare gem will pop up on Suprnova (Bit Torrent site - google it if you dont know what Im talking about) and IRC has its moments as well. You mentioned newsgroups before - have you actually tried them, or are you trying to find an alternative to them?

Along with napho, I am curious as to which bands you are having such a hard time finding. Maybe someone here can atleast point you in the right direction.

Well now were talking. It's not so much bands as it is songs. But sometimes it's bands too. Thats why Napster and AG were so great. Bootlegs ,demos, soundboard, imports, crazy live stuff that you didn't know existed, never released songs along with anything else you ever heard about but couldn't get was out there. And ofcourse anything that you wanted that wasn't considered rare, unique was a piece of cake. What a feast for music freaks. Yep miss those days big time. Now it's all "corporate" generic stuff.

Anyway my taste is pretty nuts. Got a lot of hard rock, soundtrack stuff, pop, dramatic atmospheric goosebump stuff that's hard to describe. I might be looking for some super heavy song or something that puts you in dreamland. Friends call my taste Heaven and Hell. But usually it's pretty dramatic as in minor keys (goosebumps) whether it's rock or some other genre. Currently or actually forever i've been looking for some insane stuff that you might never have heard of but here you go:

1. Lucifer's friend live
2. Joe Jackson -- "Chinatown" Live
3. Al Hirt-- a song called "T.H.E Cat"
4. Some Dan Fogelberg songs from the album Phoenix
5. Music they play during Cub games a hard rock instrumental thing. Don't know who it's by but i'm gonna find out
6. Smithereens "Green Thoughts" remastered

Yeah some weird stuff. Theres plenty more thats not even worth mentioning because it would only be on an AG. Naturally too you'll be sitting around and impulsive things hit you so thank God for Napster and Ag cause I would never find a lot of the stuff i have now. And a lot of it were things i didn't have already. Rarely like to download stuff i already have so for a couple years just racked my brain squeezing out every possible thing I heard and liked but never got and tons of different versions of things that I already had or wanted (live, etc)

So there you go. I'm sure you will have a p2p that will find all these things and if you do as Pedro Martinez said you will be my Daddy.

Oh and BTW Wonder.... you might enjoy this. Can't or haven't really tried to figure out the Newsgroups. Really wish I knew how though . How about some lessons? Thanks

well, I've never really heard of any of those bands/songs. That doesn't mean much though, as I don't consider myself to be a conneoiseur of music.

As for newsgroups, I have very little experience. I've tried NG's a few times, but due to the crappy nature of my ISP, I have had to resort to the crappy freebie services scattered across the net. As a result, newsgroups are not a primary source of downloads for me.

I'm sure someone here will A) be able to direct you to a tutorial or two on newsgroups, or B) teach you how to use them personally.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know if the average college supports newsgroups? I'm off to college within a year, and It would be nice to have access to a decent NG server.

For hubs for music you want to filter the music hubs then look for a big one and then you'll find that music. Also you may want to try moGLO to search before you hub jump to see if anyone in the dc network actually had it. I dont use moglo now as i have hubs im an OP in so i cant really hub jump but still moglo can be a useful tool.

Thanks RC but I find it very hard to believe I'll find THAT music. . I went on the biggest hubs there were (after I added a prefix to my nick just to get in) and the results were VERY small, even for well known bands, Deep Purple for example. I got maybe 40 or 50 files from the biggest hub with two, three thousand users, and all the most well known songs. That's pretty weak. The bands i have listed here forget it, not one. I'm looking for a place that WILL have the unusual, "rare" type files and this seems to be just the opposite. Basically i think that went out with Napster and AG with centralized servers and web based searches which for music was the best. MoGlo sounds interesting just to save some time if nothing else. Is it ON the rmDC site or a seperate piece of software I need to download?

I'm still wondering about some things with rmdc though. Can I get on to a bunch of hubs at once? The search on the left part of the screen if your searching for audio it will uncheck everytime you change hubs. Also there's an option if you want to search the hub you just connected to or something else, can't remember. This changes whenever you switch too. I guess it starts from scratch everytime you switch hubs. But the way to get the most amount of files, do i need to be doing anything else?
