I installed a fresh copy of Windows XP pro on a friends computer (Dell 2400 series) and now it is recognizing 3 disc drives:

CD Drive (D:) - showing up as Lite-on LTN486s 48x Max
CD RW drive (E:) - showing up as Samsung CD-R/RW SW-248F
DVD drive (G:) - showing up as AXV CD/DVD-Rom SCSI CDRom Device

Now my problem is that drive D and drive G are one in the same. This Dell 2400 has a DVD rom and a CD-rw drive.

I've tried to update drivers....none of them update. Anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this?

My problem was with Alcohol 120%

I fixed the problem with the multiple drives....

BUT NOW

The DVD-rom drive will not read DVD's...only CDs

Do you think this has anything to do with the driver? What could cause this....I'm not sure it was working correctly before I started working on it?

Lite-on LTN486s (D:) is a CD-ROM drive.

Samsung SW-248F (E:) is a CD-RW drive.

AXV (G:) is a virtual drive that Alcohol 120% uses as a pretend DVD Drive.

You do NOT have a physical DVD drive. That is why you can't read DVDs.

CompuGeek, thanks for the reply, but as you see in my second post I figured that one out.

What do you think about the DVD rom not reading DVD's?........

re-read his post directly above yours and you will see that you don't have a dvd-drive hence the reason you can't watch dvd's.

in his first post he stated that drive d:\ and drive g:\ were the SAME drive...compugeek looked at the description given for the drive and determined it was a cd-rom drive not a dvd-rom drive.
The thing that was being shown incorrectly as a dvd-rom drive was virtual (not real) drive created by a cd-burning program called alcohol 120%.

I was going on the information given in the his first post and compugeeks last post...so if drive d is the same as drive g..and drive d is cd-rom drive (not a dvd-rom drive....the description for drive g:\ was a virtual drive that didn't really exist as physical piece of hardware from my understanding).

EDIT:

D'oh...sorry I MISUNDERSTOOD.

Wow...I'm sorry for any confusion.

The virtual drive was controlling the dvd-rom drive.......I have no idea why. I thought that had something to do with it not reading dvd's.

But I uninstalled alcohol 120%.....and the dvd-rom still doesn't read dvd's.

maybe its the drive?
